Darwin Aviation Museum
The basics
Dive into Darwin’s aviation history as you browse the exhibits, which include 19 different planes and aircraft, 21 engines, relics from crashed planes, and a large collection of aviation artifacts and memorabilia. The star exhibit is the B52 bomber, one of only three in the world and the only one on display outside the US. Additional highlights include a B-25 Mitchell Bomber, an F-111C, Mirage and Sabre jet fighters, and a Royal Australian Navy Wessex. Take a peek at the remains of a Japanese Zero fighter that was shot down during the 1942 Darwin air raids, watch air-raid footage from WWII, and learn about pioneering aviators like Amy Johnston at the Female Aviation exhibition.

- Entrance is free for children under 5.
- The museum has a gift shop but there is nowhere to eat or drink on-site.
- The museum is mostly accessible for wheelchair users and strollers.
How to get there
The Darwin Aviation Museum is located about six miles (10 kilometers) northeast of downtown Darwin. It’s about a 10-minute drive along the Stuart Highway. Buses 8 and 5 run from downtown to just outside the museum.

When to get there
The museum is open daily, year-round, and weekday mornings are typically the quietest time to visit. Be aware that although there are fans, the hangars are not air conditioned and can get hot during the summer. Visit early to avoid the hottest part of the day.
WWII Sites of Darwin
Darwin was one of Australia’s most important military bases during WWII and the target of devastating air raids by Japan in 1942. Those interested in Darwin’s WWII history can also visit the Darwin Military Museum, tour the Royal Flying Doctor Service Facility, and explore the city’s old World War II Oil Storage Tunnels. There’s also the Darwin History and Wartime Experience, the East Point Military Reserve, and a number of military sites dotted around the Charles Darwin National Park.
