Like Lake McKenzie, Lake Birrabeen is a “perched lake” that sits atop a sand dune, above the water table, which means all its water is pure rainwater. All organic matter is filtered out through the sand, making it a great swimming spot and allowing it to maintain its striking crystal clear appearance, loved by photographers. The isolated atmosphere of its beach and lack of crowds make it the perfect place to soak up the sun and relax.

From the southern tip of Fraser Island, where the ferry docks, drive up 75 Mile Beach to Dilli Village. Take the exit onto Dillinghams Road then follow signs for Lake Boomanjin, before turning onto Birrabeen Road. Lake Birrabeen will be on your right after 2.2 miles (3.5 kilometers). Fraser Island is accessible by 4WD vehicle only (permits are required). If you don’t have your own 4WD vehicle, book a tour instead.
You can visit Lake Birrabeen any time of day, all year-round. Spring (September to November) and fall (March to May) promise the most comfortable temperatures.
Just 20 minutes from Lake Birrabeen, Central Station is another must-visit attraction on Fraser Island. This former forestry camp offers the chance to walk along a boardwalk through the rainforest along the banks of the Wanggoolba Creek. Facilities include an information center, picnic area, and camping facilities.
