Miravalles Volcano

Guanacaste and Northwest, Costa Rica

The Basics

At Miravalles Volcano, enjoy geothermal adventures such as crater hikes, volcano ziplining, and visits to bubbling mud baths. Tours are the safest way to explore the active geothermal area and usually include hiking past steaming fumaroles and across suspension bridges, followed by a relaxing soak in mineral-rich mud baths and naturally-heated hot springs. Other popular adventures include horseback riding and ziplining across the volcanic slopes.

Best day tour and guide
Perfect pick up, wonderful tour from expert guide. The tour started early which was great because we were the first group at all of the stops. Highly recommend stopping at the first waterfall site along the way to the volcano. If you love nature and new hiking experiences, I highly recommend this tour and tour company. Also, lunch was fantastic and they cater to special diets if you need that.

Eduardo was a great driver, and the tour was excellent. We saw some beautiful waterfalls and got to walk across some incredible suspended bridges. The lunch was more authentic than our visit to Coco Beach! The mud bath and hot springs were a unique experience.

Miravalles Volcano and Waterfalls from Playa Hermosa
My family and I definitely recommend you taking this tour. We lucked out and received Rainer as our guide. He was so knowledgeable, kind and accommodating to all of our needs. We all learned a lot, not only about The volcano Miravalles, but of the waterfalls, hot springs, and the surrounding towns and lands. We booked our trip last minute (the night before), and even though we received confirmation, we were not 100% it would still go through (do to our late registration). Rainer was at our condo (which we also requested (not listed as one of the main resorts)) promptly at 7:00 am and ready to go. We were the only ones who signed up, so we received a private tour. Again Rainer was so great to speak with, and learn from due to the pride and knowledge he has of his country. The tour itself was a bit more rugged than the other tours we had been on, which we all loved. They were shorter hikes, on a tiny bit more rugged terrain. My 10 year old and 8 year old truly enjoyed the hikes. My 8 year old, who seems to get winded quicker than the rest of us, even mentioned that she enjoyed the hike more than the others we had been on. We crossed suspension bridges, saw beautiful flora, and were overall floored that we were a part of this experience. Once we hiked both trails, we went to the hot springs/volcanic mud baths/water pots/craters. This in itself was its own magical experience, and again Rainer could not have been more accommodating and knowledgeable about the area. Finally we ended our tour with an incredibly delicious traditional Costa Rican lunch at the reception building. Again, my youngest (the pickiest eater of all of us) even enjoyed her chicken, pasta, and gallo pinto. What a beautiful experience from the pickup, to the tour, to the drop off! Do yourself a favor and book this tour.

Miravalles Volcano and Waterfalls from Playa Hermosa
My husband & I really enjoyed this excursion! Our tour guide, Manrique was AMAZING! Shared so many things with us about Costa Rica & was great conversation the whole trip. We rode up to the rainforest/waterfall hike in a safari-like truck, which we really enjoyed! The hike was awesome with so many places to overlook many waterfalls & the beautiful rainforest. The hike was just long enough to get the full experience, but not too long that you’re exhausted afterwords. Our guide, Manrique, offered to take so many pictures for us - they turned out great! Once we finished the hike, we rode the Safari truck back to the place where there is a volcanic crater. This is where you take a mud bath & then refresh yourself in the hot springs afterwords. Our skin was actually soft after our mud bath! We finished off this wonderful trip with a delicious lunch that consisted of rice, beans, meat, salad, & plantains. Truly a once in a lifetime experience & would recommend this tour to anyone of all ages!

Things to Know Before You Go

  • Although Miravalles Volcano is technically dormant, steam vents and geysers can still be very hot and should be approached with caution.

  • Bring a swimsuit, towel, and change of clothes if you plan to soak in the mud baths.

  • Wear sturdy, closed-toed shoes for hiking and pack a pair of flip-flops for the hot springs.

  • The volcano area does not have any dining facilities, but most day tours include a stop for lunch.

How to Get There

Miravalles Volcano is a 1.5-hour drive from Tamarindo, Playa Flamingo, and Playa del Coco on the Guanacaste coast. The road to reach the volcano is rough and unpaved in sections, so most travelers prefer to go on a tour that includes transportation. The nearest town, Bagaces, is about 30 minutes away.
