Rincon de la Vieja National Park

Rincon de la Vieja National Park, Guanacaste, Costa Rica

The Basics

A popular destination among hikers and nature lovers, Rincon de la Vieja National Park is most easily accessed as a day trip from Liberia or the Guanacaste coast. Guided tours typically include all transportation between trailheads, rafting put-ins, and ziplining parks, plus provide the added benefit of information from a local guide.

Those wishing to visit on their own will find a number of well-marked hiking trails of varying lengths and difficulties, from the 2-mile (3-kilometer) Las Pailas Loop to the challenging 8-hour summit of Santa Maria Volcano, both with opportunities to spot wildlife like purple orchids, monkeys, and sloths. Horseback rides are also a popular way to cover more of the park's 88 square miles (228 square kilometers) in less time. Or, take it easy with a full day at one of the area's many spas and lodges, featuring therapeutic mud baths and naturally heated hot springs.

Volcano Hike, Waterfall Swim & Hot Springs Combo on Rincon de la Vieja
The hike was amazing, exactly what I expected from Costa Rica rainforest. Humongous trees and lush foliage, Ivan, our guide, was extremely knowledgeable on the flora and fauna. We saw iguanas, monkeys, a baby eyelash viper, and a wild pig. The volcano area was a completely different microclimate, it’s insane how quickly it went from rain forest to almost desert. The waterfall and the mud baths were great as well. Overall, it was worth every penny, would recommend and repeat any day.

The area around the volcano, hot springs, waterfall, wildlife and the hike were excellent. We even saw some monkeys fairly close. The buffet lunch was very good. Edward was very knowledgeable and personable, and even his jokes were tolerable! Thank you.

Volcano Hike, Waterfall Swim & Hot Springs Combo on Rincon de la Vieja
Hike was rated as a 7 but was really about a 4-5. Very nice hike on well done gravel and concrete paths. A lot of vertical up and downs but well worth doing and seeing all the wildlife. Waterfall was beautiful and very refreshing after the hike. Hot Springs were also great. Overall an excellent trip with a very knowledgeable guide Kevin.

Rincon de la Vieja Hiking Tour and Waterfalls
We had wonderful and very knowledgeable guide Edgar and an experienced driver Herman. Edgar knows a lot about plants and trees and was able to spot whitefaced monkeys for us. Herman was good at finding ways to bypass accidents. Edgar and Herman were very accommodating, we were moving at a convenient for us pace. Magnificent waterfall, interesting fumaroles, wonderful rainforest, unlike the other rainforests we had seen before. Nice lunch after the trip was a good finish.

Volcano Hike, Waterfall Swim & Hot Springs Combo on Rincon de la Vieja
The volcano hike wasn't really a volcano hike... It was a hike in both the wet and dry forest. The waterfall swim and hot springs were absolutely highlights of my trip. This comes highly recommended!! Do not expect to come back at scheduled time in any if the excursions you do. give yourself a buffer if you have dinner reservations. Pura Vida!

When to Get There

Rincon de La Vieja National Park is open year-round, except Mondays. Dry season, which typically falls between December and April, is the recommended time to visit, as the trails are dry and it’s easiest to spot wildlife gathering at water sources. Easter (Holy Week) and Christmas are peak times for locals to visit, and the park may be very crowded.

Volcano Time

The park is composed of two volcanoes: the active Rincon de la Vieja Volcano and the dormant Santa Maria Volcano. Fuming steam vents are a sign of the active volcano’s lingering volcanic activity, while the rich biodiversity allowed by the fertile volcanic soil gave rise to a rare tropical dry forest.
