Rio Negro Hot Springs

Guachipelin, Guanacaste and Northwest, Costa Rica

The Basics

The easiest way to experience the hot springs is on a guided tour of Rincon de la Vieja National Park—a rugged geothermal landscape in Guanacaste's highlands. Tours may include a strenuous hike among steaming fumaroles and sulfuric pits and a soak in Rio Negro Hot Springs. A highlight is the chance to paint on volcanic mud and rinse it off in hot pools surrounded by rock walls. The Rio Negro flows through the pools, refreshing and reheating the water.

Volcano Hike, Waterfall Swim & Hot Springs Combo on Rincon de la Vieja
The hike was amazing, exactly what I expected from Costa Rica rainforest. Humongous trees and lush foliage, Ivan, our guide, was extremely knowledgeable on the flora and fauna. We saw iguanas, monkeys, a baby eyelash viper, and a wild pig. The volcano area was a completely different microclimate, it’s insane how quickly it went from rain forest to almost desert. The waterfall and the mud baths were great as well. Overall, it was worth every penny, would recommend and repeat any day.

SO worth it!! The hike was very substantial through different climates and we saw a lot of animals in their natural habitats! The waterfall was perfection and you can actually swim in it unlike Rio Celeste. The perfect ending was the natural hot springs and some hanging bridges. Kevin and Jose were the best guides we could ask for! Pura Vida!

Volcano-Waterfall and Hot Springs Combo ( Private)
Highly recommend this excursion. The activities are amazing and beautiful scenery. Having the private tour gives you flexibility for example our guide took us to a souvenir shop on the way back to the resort. Better prices and selection. Gabriel did an outstanding job pointing out various animals during the hike. This has to be the best tour out there….A perfect day!

Pablo was a lot of fun and really showed my friends and I a great time! This trip was 2 couples celebrating a birthday trip…the hike on the Volcano was moderate, hanging/suspending bridges were amazing, waterfall swimming was heaven, and the Hot Springs and lunch was a perfect way to end a fun filled day!

This is a fabulous combo. Our guide, Hector, was the best! He provided amazing detail of everything we saw - from the killer trees to the volcano and boiling mud pots to termite nests and so much more. You don't want to miss this one!

The area around the volcano, hot springs, waterfall, wildlife and the hike were excellent. We even saw some monkeys fairly close. The buffet lunch was very good. Edward was very knowledgeable and personable, and even his jokes were tolerable! Thank you.

Volcano Hike, Waterfall Swim & Hot Springs Combo on Rincon de la Vieja
Hike was rated as a 7 but was really about a 4-5. Very nice hike on well done gravel and concrete paths. A lot of vertical up and downs but well worth doing and seeing all the wildlife. Waterfall was beautiful and very refreshing after the hike. Hot Springs were also great. Overall an excellent trip with a very knowledgeable guide Kevin.

It was an amazingly beautiful experience being so close to nature. It touched all you can expect to see in Costa Rica during a nature tour - volcano, the green forest, waterfall, hotsprings & mudbath. We were lucky to spot quite a few birds. Hanging bridges were a bonus. Our guide Manuel Ureña was wonderful and very patient along with being knowledgeable and a great photographer.

Volcano Hike, Waterfall Swim & Hot Springs Combo on Rincon de la Vieja
The volcano hike wasn't really a volcano hike... It was a hike in both the wet and dry forest. The waterfall swim and hot springs were absolutely highlights of my trip. This comes highly recommended!! Do not expect to come back at scheduled time in any if the excursions you do. give yourself a buffer if you have dinner reservations. Pura Vida!

Volcano Hike, Waterfall Swim & Hot Springs Combo on Rincon de la Vieja
Our guide Ivan was super knowledgeable and gave us an excellent tour!! It’s a long day - about 12 hours with the pick ups, but there is a morning stop for coffee and plenty of stops for bathrooms. I strongly recommend water shoes that you can slip on once you get to the waterfalls, as the bottom was hard on the feet. We didn’t go in the hot pools, but cooled off in the river, and again the rocks were a bit slippery, so water shoes would help. Nice day!
