Mawson's Hut Replica Museum
The Basics
You can learn about the ground-breaking expedition as you explore each of the four replica huts, which include Main Hut, where Mawson and his team slept and ate; Magnetograph House, which housed equipment for measuring the Earth’s magnetic field; Absolute Magnetic Hut, where measurements were collected and recorded; and Transit Hut, used as an astronomical observatory. You can also see artefacts from the exhibition and a memorial to the expedition members that lost their lives.
Things to Know Before You Go
An admission ticket is required to enter the museum; children under 16 get discounted entry.
Put aside around an hour to visit the museum; although the huts themselves are small, there’s a lot of information to take in.
There are plenty of cafés and restaurants along the waterfront, which is a short walk from the museum.
The museum is wheelchair and stroller accessible.
How to Get There
The Mawson’s Huts Replica Museum is located on Hobart Waterfront opposite Constitution Docks, which is just a short walk from the majority Hobart’s downtown attractions. Buses stop nearby on Franklin Square.

When to Get There
The museum is open daily all year-round although opening times vary throughout the year. Mornings are typically the quietest time to visit but it’s worth timing your visit to coincide with lunch or dinner at one of the waterfront restaurants.
