Richmond Village

21A Bridge Street, Richmond, Tasmania

The Basics

Thanks to its close proximity to the capital, Richmond village makes a popular destination for a morning or afternoon tour from Hobart. Richmond’s principal sights, such as St. John Church, the Richmond Bridge, and the Old Hobart Town Model Village, are the highlights of a walking tour, while most tours also include some free time to explore independently and browse the shops.

Full-day tours often combine a visit to Richmond village with a city sightseeing tour, a view from the top of Mt. Wellington, or nearby attractions such as the Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary.

Wineglass Bay & Freycinet NP Full Day Tour from Hobart via Richmond Village
We really enjoyed the tour organised by Alex. It was a comfortable and clean mini-bus, small group, and Alex was really friendly and knowledgeable. Most memorable were the amazing views of Wineglass Bay followed by a delicious lunch with a view at Devil's Corner.

Day Tour in Mt. Field, Mt. Wellington, Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary and Richmond
What a gorgeous place and this tour gave us nature and animals all in one. The Tall Trees and waterfall walk was simply stunning and a great start to the tour. The wildlife sanctuary was fantastic-we got to feed a kangaroo! Richmond is a beautiful town and the views on Mt Wellington were breathtaking. We loved every minute and Jarrod was a fantastic, informative guide.

Richmond is a very nice little town. We enjoyed our time exploring the town. The weather was raining on and off but we still able to get a very nice photograph of the bridge.

Richmond’s Convict History

Richmond village was founded in the 1820s as an important military staging post and convict station that linked Hobart with Port Arthur, and the remains of its convict heritage can still be spotted around town. The landmark Richmond Bridge is the oldest stone bridge in Australia, built by Tasmania’s convict workers in 1825. The town is also home to Richmond Gaol (now a museum), Australia’s oldest jail, where convicts were held en route to Port Arthur. The Old Hobart Town Model Village offers a miniature re-creation of the early 19th-century town, which affords a fascinating glimpse into everyday life during the convict era.
