The basics

Stop along the way to admire landmarks such as the 19th-century All Saints Anglican Church, enjoy views of Mount Wellington from afar, and visit the Cascades Female Factory, Hobart’s most important female convict site. The neighborhood’s most-visited attraction is the Cascade Brewery, Australia’s oldest operating brewery, with a history dating back to 1824. When to get there

A daytime visit is best to take in the sights; after dark, the residential district is quiet and there’s little for visitors to do. The views from Mt. Wellington are most impressive at sunrise or sunset, so you might want to time your visit accordingly.

Hiking to Mt. Wellington

The 4,170-foot (1,271-meter) Mt. Wellington, or ‘Kunanyi’, is Hobart’s most prominent natural landmark, affording panoramic views over the city and the River Derwent. While many travelers opt to drive to the mountaintop viewpoint, it’s also possible to hike to the summit. The marked Cascades Trail runs from behind the Cascade Brewery all the way to the top, a scenic 1.5 mile (2.4 kilometer) route that winds along myrtle forest trails, passing creeks and small waterfalls, before climbing up the rocky mountainside. Plan around two hours to reach the summit.
