With ocean views and mountain vistas right on the city’s doorstep and easy access to Tasmania’s UNESCO World Heritage-listed wilderness, Hobart offers plenty to tempt adventurous travelers. Here are your options for outdoor activities in Australia’s southernmost city.

Boat Tours
Perched on the banks of the River Derwent and just minutes from the Tasman Sea coast, there are plenty of options for day tours from Hobart. Ride the ferry to Bruny Island or Maria Island National Park, explore the Port Arthur Historic Site, or enjoy a scenic lunch or sunset cruise along the River Derwent. Alternatively, opt for a full-day sailing cruise along the D’Entrecasteaux Channel or fly over to the west coast to cruise the Gordon River. Cruises may include lunch; time to swim and dive; and opportunities to view the limestone sea caves, granite cliffs, and wildlife such as dolphins, fur seals, and albatross.

Kayaking
Tall ships, adventure boats, and luxury catamarans aren’t the only way to get on the water. Admire views of Hobart on a kayaking tour along the River Derwent; paddle your way around the cliffs, caves, and beaches of the Tasman Peninsula; or venture off the beaten track in the Tinderbox Marine Nature Reserve.

Hiking
Tasmania is one of the best places for hiking in Australia and there are many trails to discover. Hiking the summit of Mount Wellington is a popular choice for visitors to Hobart, but Mount Field National Park, Huon River Valley, and the Tasman Peninsula are also great options for a day hike. Alternatively, challenge yourself to a 4-day Freycinet Experience trek, one of the Great Walks of Australia; fly out to enjoy bush walking in the Southwest National Park, or take a multi-day hiking tour of Bruny Island.

Biking
Mountain biking is another fun way to explore. Cycle around Forestier Peninsula and Cape Frederick Hendrick on a full-day bike tour or take in the views from the summit of Mount Wellington, then get your adrenaline pumping on a thrilling downhill bike ride.
