Soweto

Hector Pieterson Square, Johannesburg

The Basics

While it’s possible to visit many of Soweto’s attractions independently, it’s well worth going with a guide to learn more about the history and modern day culture of one of Africa’s largest black urban settlements. Most half-day tours include stops at Nelson Mandela’s former home, the Hector Pieterson Memorial, and lively Vilakazi Street, known for its public art.

Alternatively, combine a tour of Soweto with a visit to the Apartheid Museum and other Johannesburg sights for a full day of exploration. For something completely different, get a bird’s-eye view of the sprawling township from a helicopter.

It was a very valuable tour. Our guide and drive Clemnti was kind, thorough and knowledgeable. We visited No.4 prison, Soweto, Hector Pieterson memorial, Apartheid museum. It was a good opportunity to understand and reconsider Apartheid deeply. The buffet lunch was delicious and not too expensive. Strongly recommended!!

Soweto Half Day Tour
We were picked up from our hotel by Thabang he was friendly and showed us the best placed in Soweto. Please make this trip if you have time as guides are local and will keep you safe. We were nervous about leaving the hotel, as we had heard lots of negatives. But with the right guides it’s perfectly safe same as any city, you just need to be aware of safety.

Johannesburg and Soweto Tour (6-7 hours)
We had a great tour with Thabang. He was knowledgeable and told us personal stories from his own life to explain the people and way of life in Johannesburg and Soweto. He showed us sides of Johannesburg and Soweto that not many visitors get to see, and I felt that our safety was his top priority. I would recommend a tour with Thabang to anyone in Johannesburg for a day.

Great guide Thabang who comes from Soweto neighborhood. He was very knowledgeable about his Soweto and also generally about Johannesburg. During Soweto tour we visited poor area which was however clean and people could hope here for better future, we visited also Nelson Mandela house and we could understand what he did for his country and also other local sights. You could feel that Soweto people remember past, but live for the future. Excellent tour to learn more about South Africa past.

Soweto Half Day Tour
My wife and I had a private tour with Thabang, who is from Soweto. We were in good hands. He showed us around some upper, middle, and income areas of Soweto. We also visited the Hector Pieterson memorial and the Mandela House. Thabang was candid, informative, and charismatic. He gave us the whole truth about Soweto from his perspective. We'd recommend anyone interested in Soweto and its history to take a tour with him.

The visit to Soweto Seeing the lifestyle and homes and how the community lived. Soweto & Johannesburg Half Day Tour
We were on a half day tour of Johannesburg and Soweto. Our guide, James, was phenomenal and exceptionally knowledgeable. He didn’t just speak facts but he told stories and offered insight into the past as well as the present. Conversation with James was often light but also deep. At times we laughed and other times we were moved to tears. Anyone who has the opportunity to take this tour with James is extremely fortunate. He will forever be in our hearts.

Political prison museum,Constitutional court and Soweto tour
Mary and Amos picked us up at our hotel. Amos was a great guide, providing many details and historical facts. Our visit began at Constitution Hill and then we went on to Soweto, visiting Nelson Madela’s house and had a great lunch at Sakhumzi (traditional buffet). Thanks again for a great tour and for being great hosts.

Soweto Walking Tour with Lunch
Can only recommend this walking through Soweto - the lovely Mathapelo was an excellent tour guide, shared lots of knowledge with us around the rich history of the township and made us experience Soweto in an authentic way, including a Kota for lunch and a ride in a local minibus.

How to Get There

The sheer size of Soweto—with some two million residents—can be bewildering for first-time visitors, so it’s a good idea to travel as part of a guided tour. Alternatively, the Rea Vaya bus route runs from Johannesburg City Centre past many of the township’s notable sights.

History of Soweto

Soweto was founded in 1904 as a forced habitation settlement to which black residents were relocated against their will during an outbreak of the bubonic plague. In the 1970s and ’80s, the district was frequently in the news, especially during the Soweto Uprising of 1976. This series of protests led by black schoolchildren produced one of the world’s most iconic news images—child Hector Pieterson, shot by police and dying in another protester’s arms.
