The Basics

Costa Rica’s Venado Caves extend for nearly 8,858 feet (2,700 meters), and with water dripping from the ceiling and flowing below, the caves have a mystical, almost otherworldly feel to them that is suited for the adventurous at heart. First discovered by native Guatuso people, the caves are estimated to be somewhere between 15 and 20 million years old. From La Fortuna, half-day tours are available.

Not my first cave tour, but it was my first cave adventure and I enjoyed the experience and would do it again.

Venado Caves
So much fun, our boys loved it. Bats, tarantulas, spiders and crawling through tiny crevices in the caves. It’s challenging but an adventure our family will never forget. Thank you Elvis for helping us through the birth canal, kids are still surprised we made it! Thanks!

Great tour. Guide was excellent, he even stopped on the road to show us a sloth. He made the caves both fun and interesting for my 4 kids aged 8 to 13. Very wet and mucky but great fun.

Great guide, informative tour, covered all the main spots on the freedom trail. Guide made sure we were in the shade during the stops and added lots of comedic elements.

Venado Caves
Our boys had a great time crawling through tight spaces into hidden rooms in the cave system. Not as much fun if you're claustrophobic, but you can bypass the tightest paths.

Venado Caves Underground Experience from La Fortuna
Our tour got moved to the AM due to rain and i was very pleased with the communication! Minor was an amazing guide. He gave so much fascinating information about the caves and Costa Rica mixed with humor. My boyfriend and I really enjoyed our tour with him and wish he was our guide for all of our tours! The cave tour was cool, kinda nervewracking at times, but Minor helped keep my anxiety in check! Overall a very cool experience that I'd recommend!

Venado Caves Underground Experience from La Fortuna
We had a brilliant afternoon visiting the caves. They were fascinating and our guide Antonio was very knowledgeable and made the tour really fun. We saw howler monkeys on the journey and several creatures in the caves including hundreds of bats. Would definitely recommend if you want to do something a bit different.

Venado Caves
Arturo was brilliant so friendly, fun and informative!! The cave guide Henry was superb, made our time in the caves so fun. Please please go for it, and do the ‘birthing canal’ it’s super exciting! Cannot thank the guides enough for their expertise. What an amazing experience.. PURA VIDA!! The best part of this tour is the group sizes. We had the caves to ourselves! So much better than the huge groups we saw coming in and out. Felt so lucky to be apart of this tour compared to the others!!

Things to Know Before You Go

  • Bring a waterproof camera and a change of clothes; you will get wet and muddy.

  • The caves’ rock formations have earned nicknames such as “papaya,” “altar,” “lion’s head,” and “coral” thanks to their unique shapes.

  • Because there are many confined spaces in the caves, this attraction is not recommended for those who have claustrophobia.
