The Basics

You can view Emerald Bay from overlooks and hiking trails on land, by air on a helicopter tour, or by water on a Lake Tahoe cruise. All offer different perspectives to take in breathtaking views of the picturesque spot. Sunset is a particularly beautiful time to visit, so book sunset dinner cruises and sunset helicopter tours in advance. Other not-to-be-missed sights include Vikingsholm, a 38-room mansion that is one of the finest examples of Scandinavian architecture in the United States, and Eagle Falls, a beautiful waterfall accessible by short hike.

Short but worthwhile trip!
Short but very memorable experience with great aerial views of Lake Tahoe. The pilot was friendly and pointed out numerous local landmarks.

This was a honeymoon adventure for us and my first time in a whirlybird. I was terrified but honestly, what wasted worry that was! The pilot, Bryce, was excellent, the ride smooth and serene, and the views of Tahoe are unsurpassed from the sky. The guys were super friendly and we definitely plan to fly with them again!

Emerald Bay Sunset Boat tour in the Grateful Red
My wife and I booked a sunset boat cruise with Captain Bryan. His communication was flawless - reached out in advance to confirm, answer any questions, etc. - and then reached out again the day of the cruise. He made some great suggestions about the timing of the cruise, and which locations to visit. At each stop along the way, he shared great information, and was very sincere and genuine. He even helped us take some photos! Absolutely rate the trip a 10/10 - must do if you're in the area!

Great time with Captain Bryan. We all enjoyed the speed boat as we haven’t been on one since we were a lot younger😄. The history lesson of the lake, camp grounds & emerald island were very fascinating. Thanks💙

Private Emerald Bay, Lake Tahoe Tour with Captain (2 hours)
My husband had admired the wooden boats from afar for years. He had a milestone birthday coming up, and we booked this your with two other couples. It was a beautiful evening and we have wonderful memories with Captain Ed. He is very knowledgeable about the history of Lake Tahoe.

Amazing experience that allowed us to see beautiful views of Lake Tahoe. They run a bit late and are on tight on the scheduling, but our pilot allowed us to stay on a bit longer so I really appreciated that as I had purchased this as a gift!

When to Get There

Emerald Bay is stunning in all seasons. Summer is the best time to visit, as temperatures are fairly mild. In winter, however, temperatures often remain below freezing and access to hiking trails is limited. You can pick up trail maps from the Lake Tahoe Visitor Center in summer or from the park’s headquarters in South Lake Tahoe year-round.

Popular Lake Tahoe Activities Nearby

Many visitors come to beautiful Lake Tahoe for the scenery alone, but there’s plenty of outdoor adventure to be had as well. In the summer, hiking, biking, and water sports are widely available, while the winter opens world-class ski runs at the many nearby resorts. Photographers will appreciate the landscape photo opportunities, including the surrounding, often-snow-capped Sierra mountain range.
