The Basics

Covent Garden’s original purpose was as a convent garden, where Westminster Abbey monks would grow fruit and vegetables, some 500 years ago. In the 17th century, architect Inigo Jones built St. Paul’s Church (not to be confused with the cathedral) and the Covent Garden Piazza and the area started to take shape. In the streets around the market came theaters, coffee houses, and restaurants, turning the area into a nightlife hotspot.

The market arcades, built in the 1830s, were home to fruit, vegetable, and flower sellers. The original market was moved out of the city in the 1970s, and the arcades were redeveloped into stores and cafes. Nowadays, the piazza is famous for lively street performers, while the surrounding streets—Floral Street, Neal Street, Long Acre, and Mercer Street—offer some of the best shopping in London. Guided walking, bike, and taxi tours visit the area on a regular basis. It's also a stop on hop-on hop-off sightseeing buses.

Fun pub tour!
There were 6 of us on this Fat Tire tour. Nick was a great guide. He had lots of fun facts and stories about the pubs we were visiting and beer knowledge as well. I would definitely recommend this tour. We had one person who doesn’t drink beer and she even found one she liked! Fat Tire was great with keeping in touch before the tour and letting us know what to expect.

Misfits of Covent Garden Walking Tour
Cecily was a great guide. She moved us about Covent Gardens to just the right areas to share her info of the Misfits of CG tour. She is a great speaker, very informative and easily understood. Such a delight to see the younger generation so into their local history and eager to share the culture new and old. She is a very good speaker, listener, and I bet an excellent writer! Ask for her on this walking tour!

Small Group Covent Garden Historic Pub Tour in London
What a great tour! We loved visiting the historical pubs with Rachel. She was very animated and told several stories around each pub. It was also helpful for us Americans to understand how pubs work so that we know what to expect when being served. Overall a fun, worthwhile, and enjoyable experience!

Very knowledgeable guide. The museum is too big to navigate and see the most important artifacts. Having a guide is a museum game changer.
