The Basics

Designed by Mexican architect Pedro Ramírez, the National Museum of Anthropology is Mexico’s largest museum and houses the largest collection of ancient Mexican art in the world. Each of the 23 permanent exhibit halls is dedicated to a different cultural region or indigenous group, offering an in-depth look at the country’s history. Because of the museum’s size and the breath of the collection, many visitors need more than one day to explore it all.

The only way to experience a wonderful museum
Get the guide! We visited once without a guide and found the exhibits interesting, but we went back with a guide and he brought the museum to life for us with his stories Fascinating! (Also, only the most valuable items in the collections have signs in English, so you don’t always know what you are looking at without the guide. ) And you are allowed to enter an hour before the general public so you have the museum to yourself. Truly one of the best museum experiences we have ever had.

My spouse and I opted for a private tour due to Covid concerns. Our guide was prompt, friendly, and courteous. Although he told us it would take a week to tour all 20 rooms of the museum, he gave us the high points in a 2.5 hour tour. It was fascinating. He discussed the history, the peoples, the art, and how it all related to modern Mexico City. We both felt we learned a lot and enjoyed it immensely.

We had a great time with Christian! He was so kind & generous with his knowledge across so many parts of our rich culture. Given the limited time to walk through so much, we felt more than satisfied from the areas we did cover and si glad we decided to take this tour. Now we’re looking forward to a return visit to continue exploring what we didn’t have time to visit together.

This tour is set in one of the most beautiful city parks I have ever seen. Wear your walking shoes and prepare to take it all in. Our guides, Hector and Letitia were gracious, knowledgeable, and passionate about the history they shared with us. I can't recommend this tour enough!

When to Get There

Even though this museum is the city’s most visited, its vast size allows enough room to accommodate the crowds without feeling cramped. On Sundays, Mexican residents receive free admission, so you’ll most likely encounter the most visitors then. Note that the museum is closed every Monday.

Nearby Chapultepec Castle

Just south of the National Museum of Anthropology in Chapultepec Park, Chapultepec Castle is famous for being the only castle in North America to have housed royalty. Named after the Aztec word chapoltepēc, meaning “at the grasshopper’s hill,” the impressive hilltop structure is home to the National History Museum (Museo Nacional de Historia). The museum’s permanent collection includes paintings, documents, artifacts, and clothing from different periods in Mexican history and serves as a venue for concerts and theater productions.
