The basics

Leonardo is known as a Renaissance man, both artist and engineer, but many don’t realize that Italy’s famous luminary came from a family of winemakers and was a passionate vintner, himself. Tucked behind the elegant Renaissance villa, Casa degli Atellani, Leonardo’s vineyard is testimony to his love of cultivating grapes, and recent excavations have unearthed his original 200-by-575-foot rectangle of land, as well as identified the varietal Leonardo grew—malvasia di candia aromatica, a white grape popular in Lombardy during the Renaissance—today replanted as in the artist’s time. Booking advance tickets to visit Leonardo’s Vineyard is strongly recommended, especially on the weekends. Visits include an audio tour of the beautifully renovated Casa degli Atellani and a guided walk through the picturesque gardens and vineyard.

Leonardo's Vineyard: choose a Guided Tour or a Self-Guided Tour
We enjoyed the gardens and how peaceful they are. And we saw two turtles. I also liked that the home is still currently lived in on the upper floors. How amazing that we can still see the vineyards as well.

This was a great overview tour for Leonardo and his history in Milan. We also got to see quite a few historical buildings as we walked around. Nice tour to start our vacation.

Leonardo's Vineyard: choose a Guided Tour or a Self-Guided Tour
We had a guide. The tour was as much about the house as it was the vineyard. If you have an hour to kill, it is enjoyable. Loved hearing how Leonardo stayed in the house when he was painting the Last Supper across the street.

Leonardo in Milan the Last Supper guided tours
Our travel guide Laura was 5-star in every respect. She exceeded expectations in every regard. The instructions where to meet for the tour and how to use the voucher to obtain the tickets for Cenacalo Leonardo were, however, extremely weak and confusing. 1-star in that area. Fix that and the experience was perfect.

Leonardo's Vineyard: choose a Guided Tour or a Self-Guided Tour
The home interior is stunning, the ceilings are incredible. The courtyard and winery is beautiful. Wish I was one of the lucky people who actually live there. I would have preferred a self guided tour which is what i thought I purchased; however my tour guide was very knowledgable and interesting. I just personally find it hard to look and absorb - focus on the sights with someone talking in my ear.

Not usually a fan of a large tour. So much rich history revealed in scholarly detail peppered with historical gossip to keep you engaged. And always felt looked after in such a large group which was not an easy task on a cold, rainy day.
Great tour and guide.

Santa Maria delle Grazie

Leonardo’s Vineyard is set just across from the 15th-century Santa Maria delle Grazie, home to one of the most celebrated works of Renaissance art in the world: Leonardo da Vinci’s The Last Supper. This groundbreaking fresco decorates the refectory wall of the church’s Dominican convent, but the church is an important work of Gothic and Romanesque architecture, modified by the Renaissance architect Donato Bramante at the end of the 15th century.
