Old Port of Montreal (Vieux Port de Montréal)

De la Commune West, Montreal, QC, Canada

The Basics

Set along the St. Lawrence riverfront, the atmospheric Old Port is one of downtown Montreal’s biggest attractions. There are two main ways to explore: either on land or by water. Bike, quadricycle, and walking tours of the Old Port typically follow routes along the waterfront and through Old Montreal (Vieux-Montréal), the historic landmark-packed heart of the city. In summer, sightseeing cruises, Jet Ski tours, and self-guided paddleboat tours depart from the Old Port. Many family-friendly attractions are located in the Old Port, including La Grande Roue de Montréal observation wheel, and aerial obstacle and zipline courses.

HIGHLY recommend this tour! Our tour guide was excellent, very knowledgeable, and kept up with our barrage of questions (we're all history nerds). She also had a great sense of humor so we had lots of laughs along the way.

First of all, Martin is a treasure! You will not find a more knowledgeable or enthusiastic guide. He gave us history, a great overview and many recommendations for things to follow up on. All have turned out to be great. There is not a ton of walking, it’s a very leisurely pace if anyone is concerned about that. If you’ve never been to Montreal this tour is a great way to get acquainted and get your bearings.

Stacy was who we needed

Stacy was just who we needed. Aware of our need to walk slowly but still learn everything we could. She kept us going at a perfect pace, told us the history of everything we were seeing, and in the end gave us recommendations of where else to go and also places to eat. Spot on for all of it. Thanks to her we felt we go a good sampling of Montreal old town area. Easy to understand, perfect English for those of us who speak only a few sentences in French, and very enthusiastic about Montreal and all of Canada.

Pierre was great! Very knowledgeable! He made great recommendations for later. He also showed us parts of old Montreal that we would not have found on our own. A solid two hour tour that went by very quickly. Our 15, 11 and 9 year old were able to enjoy the tour as well. Highly recommend this tour at the beginning of your trip so that you can explore the recommendations thoroughly.

When to Get There

Visit in summer for the widest range of activities. The area is busiest on weekend afternoons and evenings; arrive early to beat the crowds. Although it’s quieter in winter, there is still lots to do, including ice skating, riding the observatory wheel, and soaking in the outdoor hot tub at a floating boat spa.

Montreal Clock Tower

Among the most notable buildings situated along the waterfront is the 148-foot (45-meter) high Montreal Clock Tower, which was built between 1919 and 1922 to mark the entrance to the port and to serve as a memorial to sailors lost at sea. In spring and summer, climb to the top of the tower for spectacular city and river views.
