The basics

Mt. Vesuvius is easily seen from below, but a trip to the volcano itself provides the best understanding of the area and its impact on the region’s history. A hike up the mountain begins in Mount Vesuvius National Park, which has nine nature trails and allows for summit access. The crater’s lunar landscape is otherworldly, and the views are tough to beat. Many tours combine a visit to the area with a stop in Pompeii, Sorrento, or the Amalfi Coast.

Our guide at Pompeii, Natalie, was fantastic. Very knowledgeable with a great sense of humour. We then climbed to the Mt Vesuvius crater, not for the unfit but very worthwhile if you get there.

Mt Vesuvius and Pompeii Tour by Bus from Sorrento
A really great adventure with a very knowledgeable guide. Whilst it seems quite a long day you could not do it in less time and do it justice. To see Pompeii in the flesh is fascinating and Vesuvius is amazing and brings perspective but beware the climb up is quite steep. The lunch was very average but served a purpose at lunchtime although taking your own food and save the €15 plus drinks per head would be worthwhile.

Our guide in Pompeii was pleasant and knowledgeable. Pizza was great. They drove you most of the way up Mt Vesuvius then you walk the rest of the way up. It’s not for people with bad knees. Great time.

Our guide in Pompeii was wonderful and extremely knowledgeable. We spent 3 hours walking through the ruins in amazement. Learning the culture and how the people of Pompeii lived, what roll status played in the community. Ahhh Mt Vesuvius…. What an adventurous climb that was ! But oh so worth it! I’m overweight but in ok shape and it was tough….just beware of that… but again, cool to see inside a volcano!

Naples Shore Excursion Mt Vesuvius and Pompeii Day Trip
Pompeii is amazing- we just wish we had a little more time. You could walk around for hours and this tour only gave you 2. It was very informational and the guide was great. We probably didn’t need 1.5 hours for lunch. The walk up to Vesuvius was worth it- we are experienced hikers so it wasn’t bad but I think other people were surprised at the difficulty. It was a great day!

When to get there

Though Mt. Vesuvius is open year-round, the best time to go is in the off-season from October to April. Crowds and temperatures rise during summer, which can get hectic in southern Italy. Spring and early fall provide the best times to avoid the area’s potential fog.

The volcanic eruption of AD 79

It’s impossible to understand the impact that Mt. Vesuvius had on Italy without a visit to the nearby archaeological sites of Pompeii and Herculaneum. Though many people tragically died in the volcanic eruption, their villas, roads, public buildings, artworks, and ways of life remain largely intact in two of the world’s best-preserved ancient sites.
