The Basics

The Diamond Head trail is 1.6 miles (2.6 kilometers) round-trip, gaining over 550 feet (168 meters) from the trailhead to the summit and affording amazing views of the island and the Pacific Ocean. Unless you're trying to be the first one up to the Diamond Head summit in the morning, enjoy the hike at a steady pace and take in the views on the way—travelers usually allot one to two hours for the Diamond Head crater hike. This crater adventure is often included on Oahu city tours or circle island tours that take in a number of Hawaiian landmarks and historic sites such as Manoa Falls, Pearl Harbor, and the North Shore. Consider taking a guided Diamond Head tour to learn the history and local stories surrounding the popular crater.

Best tour for entirety of island
Stephanie was such a great tour host. She made sure to stop at every and any stop WE wanted. She also threw in a bunch of fun facts that made the tour worth while. Being able to tour the entire island is a must. Will definitely book again.

Half-day Tour in Diamond Head Sunrise and Parasail
Completing the hike up Diamond Head and watching the sunrise was awesome! The view was beautiful with overlooking the city, ocean and grass covered mountains. There were about 5 couples on the vessel with us and our captain and assistant. The assistant helped harness us in and gave us directions. We parasailed 750 feet in the air - very exhilarating and so much fun. The assistant took photos for us - wonderful!!

Diamond Head Hiking and Oahu Island Experience feat. North Shore
The most memorable parts of the experience were the hike up diamond head and having Stephanie as a driver/tour guide. She had personal experiences that she shared about sites along the way. “ my dad taught us to swim there”, and the best shave ice , among many statements that brought us closer to experiencing Oahu

E-Bike Ride & Diamond Head Hike Tour
Ryan was an amazing guide, very knowledgeable about the area. We had a great time with the E-Bikes. The Diamondhead hike was amazing beautiful views, and although moderately challenging for an out of shape 51 year old lady totally doable!

Diamond Head Hiking Narrated Tour
Definitely a great experience. Just make sure you get the hiking and parking reservation as this is only for a recorder and headphones that gives you a background of the history. Bring lots of water and sunscreen. The hike will be challenging for some but the views are breathtaking.

Waikiki Trolley Coastline/Diamond Head Line
The best way to see the island on the cheap. Guides are extremely knowledgeable and from the island. The guide knows local info, where to eat, where to shop, best beaches... And, plus, they tell little stories along the way.

Great way to see the island’s main attractions with a knowledgeable local guide and comfortable journey. This tour tops out at 8 people so it feels personal and cozy. The early morning hike up diamond head for the sunrise was lovely.

Diamond Head Hiking and Oahu Island Experience feat. North Shore
We had such a great time! Stephanie was very knowledgeable and customized the tour for what we wanted to see. She made so many extra stops that weren't even on the itinerary! They kept it to a small group size too, which made it more enjoyable.

When to Get There

Diamond Head State Monument opens at 6am and closes at 6pm daily, with last entry at 4:30pm. Considering over 2,000 people hike up the famous volcanic crater each day, you'll never have the trail completely to yourself, unless you start your day with a race to the top. Though crowds are heavy almost every day, Tuesdays tend to be especially heavy since one of Oahu's most popular sights—Hanauma Bay—is closed. The best time to beat the heat is early in the morning, and there's usually a line in front of the gate for the 6am opening. Diamond Head tours also arrive pretty early, so hiking late in the day may sometimes help you beat the crowds. If you plan to hike up Diamond Head in winter, keep an eye out for humpback whales that leap from the waters offshore.

Diamond Head History

In Hawaiian, the mountain is known as ‘Leahi’—the name Diamond Head comes from British sailors who found calcite crystals embedded in the mountain and falsely claimed they were diamonds.
