Fifth Avenue (Quinta Avenida)

Playa del Carmen, Mexico

The Basics

A walk along Fifth Avenue is the best way to experience the lively atmosphere of Playa del Carmen. In addition to abundant shops and eateries, street vendors sell everything from fresh coconuts to handicrafts and sunglasses, and street performers are often seen entertaining the masses. The hotels on Fifth Avenue boast an ideal location, just steps from the beach and downtown attractions.

Visit Fifth Avenue independently or as part of a Playa del Carmen sightseeing tour that includes hotel pickup and drop-off in Cancun. Tours typically include a visit to Maya ruins and/or a cenote swim. There are also popular Fifth Avenue evening tours.

I enjoyed the experience but information on what to expect would have helped me better understand how this tour worked. We had to wait 30 for a van between stops but vans were leaving not filled during our wait. I would recommend and do this excursion again.

Everyone was very hospitable. The beach bar was very over priced but 5th Avenue was lovely. Hope you enjoy

I enjoyed this trip. You got a lot for the money spent. The driver was prompt in picking us up. We went to a jewelry store which was very expensive and pointless. I took a star away for that because it was so pointless. Next was the tequila museum. I enjoyed tasting the different tequila. Jesus was a wonderful guide. They also had different souvenirs so you could shop. After that we were dropped off in Playa del Carmen for about 2-3 hours. It was more time then I needed actually. I shopped, ate and visited a museum. Great trip

Not enough time

Not enough time to shop at Playa del Carmen. Didn't realize that we had to stay at the beach club. Thought it was just a drop off stop. The girl was reluctant to give us the wrist band to use the bathroom because we didn't want to stay there. We wanted to go shopping. That was the whole purpose for the trip. Also is took us two hours to get back to our hotel when it was supposed to be one. The driver took passengers to their resort that was out of our way. What if I had something scheduled and missed it because the return time was off by an hour. It would be nice to have the trip be just to Playa del Carmen instead of the jewelry and tequila shop stop. The driver was wonderful and the ride was very comfortable. Thank you.

How to Get There

Fifth Avenue is located in downtown Playa del Carmen. When to Get There

As with all of the Riviera Maya, Fifth Avenue is almost always crowded, except for early in the morning before the shops open (businesses have varying opening hours). Winter brings large numbers of travelers to Playa del Carmen, and the weeks before and after Easter are some of the busiest.

Fundadores Park (El Zócalo)

Located just off the ferry dock, Fundadores Park (El Zócalo) is a beachside park that sits along Fifth Avenue. It’s the heart of old Playa del Carmen and the main square from which the rest of the tourist area branches out. The perimeter of the park is lined with shops selling local crafts and souvenirs, restaurants, popular hotels, a bandstand, Our Lady of Carmen church, the arched beachside Portal Maya sculpture, and a playground for kids.
