Sandy Bay Roatán
The Basics
Sleepy Sandy Bay and its white sand beach make for a more laid-back alternative to the busy West End. For a break from the beach, check out the Roatan Museum and Institute for Marine Sciences, Carambola Botanical Gardens, and Anthony’s Key Resort. You’ll also find some of the island’s top eateries and boutique hotels in the area.
Buggy adventures into the interior of the island, popular with thrill-seeking travelers, often end at Sandy Bay Beach with time to relax or go for a swim.
Things to Know Before You Go
If you plan to go in the water, make sure your sunscreen is reef-safe.
The beach is free and open to the public, and many of its resorts offer day passes.
How to Get There
Sandy Bay is located on the north shore of Roatan, not far from the West End. The easiest way to get there is by taxi or as part of an organized tour.
When to Get There
The ideal time to enjoy the beach in Sandy Bay is between March and May, when the weather tends to be dry and warm. For a quieter beach experience, avoid days when cruise ships are moored in Roatan.
Best Beaches in Roatan
Sandy Bay Beach is a favorite among many travelers to Roatan, but it’s far from the only appealing option. Crystal clear water and bright white sand make West Bay Beach one of Honduras’ most beautiful, while Marbella Beach on the north coast is almost always empty of people. If you’re looking for a bustling beach scene complete with water sports, head to Half Moon Bay in the West End.
