Colosseum

Piazza del Colosseo, Rome, 00184

The Basics

As the second most popular attraction in Italy after only the Vatican, the Colosseum hosts some 4 million annual visitors, meaning that long lines are nearly inevitable without a skip-the-line tour. Choose from a number of tours suited to any age or interest, such as a Colosseum underground tour that heads beneath the arena floor to explore a network of passages; a small-group guided tour of the third tier; or a night tour that offers an eery experience and relief from the daytime heat. Consider group tours, self-guided audio tours, or private tours to gain an understanding of this well-preserved ancient Roman amphitheater and its historical importance.

Beautiful day at the forum
Great tour- Flavia moved us smoothly through the lines (loved skipping through them!), and shared lots of interesting tidbits, information and her passion about the subject. Definitely recommended!!!

Colosseum Underground and Ancient Rome Semi-Private Tour MAX 6 PEOPLE GUARANTEED
This was a fantastic tour. They had just completed the walkways through the floor of the Colosseum during Covid. My kids are major history buffs and the guide was excellent with them. We all learned a lot and we were able to see things that were available because of our small group. I would not recommend for little little kids as it is a lot of walking and not stroller friendly. If your kids or you are into history this a great tour.

Skip the Line: Colosseum, Roman Forum, and Palatine Hill Tour
It was wonderfully helpful to take a tour. Even though it was 2.5 hours we were able to see all of the sites and learn important details about the Colosseum we wouldn’t have known just going on our own. Even our youngest son was interested the whole time. Our guide was knowledgeable and personable. Grazie!

Skip the Line: Colosseum, Roman Forum & Palatine Hill Guided Tour
We were very pleased with this tour. Could have moved along a little faster in some areas, but overall, it was fine. It gave a good overview of the Colosseum, Forum and Palatine area. I would recommend it.

Small-Group Tour of Colosseum Underground, Arena and Forum
Daniele V. is an amazing guide! A wealth of knowledge and kindness, he made the Forum and Colosseum more than well-placed stones. His descriptions and folder of artist’s representations of the ruins were excellent for understanding the context of the sites.

Colosseum Arena Floor, Roman Forum and Palatine Hill
The whole trip was great! Had not appreciated the size of the colosseum and area around it so wear comfortable shoes as it’s a long walk! The guide (Lucas) was very informative and filled in lots of details about that gave more perspective

Skip the Line: Colosseum, Roman Forum & Palatine Hill Guided Tour
Our tour guide, Chiara, provided us with objective historical information about the Colosseum as we walked around the site. To know the fact we were literally retracing the same steps that a typical Roman in the Roman Empire would have was one of my most memorable experiences on this tour. Our tour guides understanding of time to explain and time to take photos was a great ostentation of what a good tour guide would do.

When to Get There

Since the Colosseum is most crowded during the middle of the day, begin or end your Rome tour with a visit first thing in the morning or just before last entry (which is an hour before closing time) in the late afternoon. Alternatively, choose a night tour for a unique, less crowded experience. Summer is the most popular time of year to visit, while the site receives fewer crowds in November through February, aside from the Christmas and New Year holidays.
