Rome, Province of Rome, 00153

The Basics

Many of Trastevere’s narrow streets are closed to traffic, so the best way to explore this ancient Roman neighborhood is by getting off the beaten path with a guided walking tour—though Vespa scooter and Segway tours are also fun options. Trastevere is famous for its excellent cuisine, so consider taking a food tour to discover traditional Roman dishes, Italian wines, and open-air food markets. Alternatively, tour after dark to rub elbows with young Romans out for a night on the town.

Rome: Trastevere & Jewish Ghetto Tour with Pizza Tasting
David was an enthusiastic articulate guide. We were a small group, leisurely exploring the area. I might not agree with calling the tour 'The Jewish Ghetto tour' as it was definitely an exploration of Trastevere and focused on the Catholic Church's history in the area. Perhaps a more honest perspective of why the Jewish people ended up in segregation and how that made those Jewish families easy prey for their executioners should be the tour focus..

Trastevere and Jewish Ghetto tasting street food and walking tour-tiered pricing
Our guide, Virginia, was great. Knowledgeable and with interesting stories. The food was delicious and all of us tried food we had never tried before. Visiting the less well-known areas of Rome was really eye opening and we visited Trastevere after, as we knew where to go and what to look out for. Would definitely recommend.

Rome Trastevere Tour by Segway
The tour guide was simply amazing. Julio was not only well informed and knowledgeable about Rome’s history, he is also an excellent instructor. He spent a good half hour instructing us on how to ride the Segway. He was also very attentive about our comfort level and safety through the entire ride.

Rome Trastevere WalkinFood Tour
Our tour guide Silvia was excellent. She took us around the Trastevere neighborhood and we got to try a lot of different foods that she recommended. She was very friendly and she was very knowledgeable about the area, explaining to us all of the various sites that we were visiting and or passing. We felt like we were walking around with a friend. I would highly recommend this tour and with Silvia.

When to Get There

Trastevere is delightful to explore all year round, though the neighborhood is best appreciated when the weather is mild. For a unique look into one of the most lively neighborhoods in the Eternal City, take a leisurely stroll by night. Like much of Rome, the area gets crowded in summer.

Caravaggio in Trastevere

In the early 17th century, Caravaggio was commissioned to paint “The Death of the Virgin” for the Chiesa di Santa Maria della Scala in Trastevere. The master painter’s realistic depiction of the Virgin as swollen and bare-legged was considered blasphemous, and the parish rejected his work. It now hangs in the Louvre in Paris.
