Windmills of Kinderdijk

Nederwaard 1, Kinderdijk, Netherlands, 2961

The Basics

Marked walking and cycling trails lead visitors around the windmills and afford magnificent views of the canals, mills, and dykes. At the visitor center, located in the Wisboom Pumping Station, a film tells the story of Kinderdijk and its windmills, while two of the windmills are open to the public as museums, offering behind-the-scenes peeks into a working mill. Admission tickets include entrance to the visitor center exhibitions, windmill museums, and an audio guide. (It is free to view the windmills from the outside.) Boat tours around the canals are also available, offering stunning views of the windmills and the surrounding countryside.

Most visitors choose to visit on a half-day tour from Rotterdam, but day trips from Amsterdam to Rotterdam and the Hague often also include a stop at Kinderdijk.

Heaven on earth
This tour was truly a pleasure. A very thoughtful and personalized journey that made Kinderdijk feel like home! The biking was so fun and allowed for a beautiful (almost spiritual) experience as we travelled through the Dutch countryside. Our tour guide Marco was an absolute joy and was the main reason the tour was so fantastic. The tour felt seamless and we were given excellent info regarding transportation that served us for the rest of our trip. Highly recommend.

Escape the busy city for an afternoon. This Dutch country side tour is very relaxing and you are surrounded by picture postcard scenery at nearly every turn. I went on an earlier morning trip which was nice to avoid the afternoon crowd that started to form as we were wrapping up our day. Marco is personable and truly wants you to get the most out of your experience. If I am every lucky enough to return to the Rotterdam area I would absolutely do this again.

A magical experience between the wetland ducks, magnificent windmills, walking through the countryside in spring enjoying looking at newly prepared gardens, nesting ducks and swans along the waterways with only three other people. Marco provided expert photographic advice during the tour [delighted with my photographs], and have to thank him for the care and assistance provided both before and after the actual tour.
Great bike ride with windmills.

Marco was great! We were staying in Delft and had to take the train to Rotterdam. He picked us up- took the tram and got us to the water taxi. The tour itself was very peaceful. We were not rushed. Bike path is fairly flat so it’s not a difficult ride for children or older adults. Great Experience.

Marco was amazing and provided a wonderful day, even in super rainy weather. We got to ride by the local farms, learn about the agriculture industry, and see lots of wild and domesticated animals. The visit to the local cheese factory was a special stop. Biking was definitely the way to go because we got to see so much more. Marco was really great as a guide. He was in constant communication with us to make sure our arrival and tour were effortless. Marco also enjoyed sharing the local insights which made our day even more enjoyable. This day was one of our best days of our trip.
Great experience! Would recommend for anyone traveling to the Netherlands!

This tour was fantastic! Abdullah showed us some great spots that we did not expect and made the tour extra special. We traveled to the tour from Amsterdam and felt like it was great and saw so much in a day.

Excellent trip for seeing the iconic symbol of the Netherlands (windmills). Also, the time in the Hague and Mauritius Huis are a well spent day.

First of all the weather was super , blue skies and a small breeze. The bike ride through the countryside was so pleasant and scenic . We loved seeing the swans, ducks with their ducklings, rabbits and even the cows. This all added to our ride. Then came the windmills, such a sight. Marco was great. He was very informative and pleasant. The stop for the apple pie treat was perfectly timed. We were on a bit of a travel frame but he managed the ride perfectly for us to be back in time to catch the correct return SeaBus. A great day overall.

When to Get There

The Windmills of Kinderdijk museums and visitor center are open year-round, although hours vary throughout the year. You can walk along the canals and admire the windmills at any time, though a particularly magical time is during the weeklong Illumination Festival in September, when the windmills are lit up at night.

Windmills of the Netherlands

The windmills of Kinderdijk and other locations around the Netherlands are more than scenic—they help to manage the high water levels and prevent flooding throughout the notoriously low-lying country. Most of the polder mills in Kinderdijk served as pumping stations and were part of a complex water management system that included dykes, canals, and reservoirs. Although more modern systems are in place today, some of the mills still function as backups.
