San Jose to Poas Volcano National Park

Costa Rica is famous for its coffee, natural wonders, and diverse wildlife, and this full-day tour from San Jose combines all three. Learn how Costa Rican coffee is made on a guided tour of the Doka Coffee Plantation, enjoy magnificent views of the Poas Volcano crater on a scenic walk, and spot wildlife around the La Paz Waterfall, including a visit to the country’s largest butterfly observatory.

We will visit the Doka Coffee Estate for a delicious breakfast. Then we will be treated to a coffee tour in an actual coffee plantation where we will learn the ancient techniques used by the experts to produce some of the best coffee in Costa Rica and around the world. The careful process involved in the cultivation, harvesting and roasting of the Golden Bean will then be illustrated, very hands-on, and then we will savor the delectable product. After the coffee tour, we will continue to Poas Volcano National Park, where there is a noticeable change in temperature and exuberant vegetation of the cloud forest. The Poás Volcano, is an active 2,708-metre (8,885 ft) stratovolcano. The crater of the volcano is over a mile across and 1050 feet deep. At the Volcano we will have time to enjoy the impressive main crater with its sulfur fumaroles, and hike on a trail to the beautiful Botos Lagoon as we learn about the different ecosystems in the park.

For this full day tour, we will visit three incredible places that are completely unique to this area. As well as learning more about Costa Rican coffee, we will visit Poás Volcano, one of only five active volcanoes in the country. We will then see over 100 species including rescued sloths and hummingbirds in the La Paz Waterfall Gardens. This is my favourite trip in the San Jose area, providing you with a great combination of picturesque scenery and the chance to get up close to many species found in Costa Rica.

From San Jose, you will take a half day making your way to the Poas Volcano, making a few stops along the way. You'll stop at the coffee plantation in Alajuela and see how it is cultivated. You'll also stop at a strawberry plantation to see what that is all about too. When you get to the top of the volcano, you can take a 20 minute walk for the views.

One-day tour to visit the Poás Volcano National Park and the Sarapiquí rainforest. It includes breakfast and lunch. We will pick you up at your hotel in San José to travel to the most famous of the active volcanoes in Costa Rica. Upon leaving, we will stop for a delicious breakfast. Then we will visit the rain forest that we will travel with our local guide through it while we learn and discover the flora and fauna of the place, we hope to see monkeys, lazy people and much more. At the end we will have a delicious meal before returning to San José.
