Calle al Parque Nacional El Boqueron, San Salvador, El Salvador

The basics

Thanks to its convenient location, panoramic views, abundant hiking trails, and pleasant year-round climate, El Boquerón is one of El Salvador’s most visited national parks—and one of its most fascinating geological marvels.

Tours typically combine El Boquerón with exploration of the capital city, San Salvador, or Suchitoto, one of El Salvador’s best-preserved colonial cities. Day trips often include hiking trails that weave their way to scenic miradors. The park also has also a small museum and several restaurants where you can feast on Salvadoran food and soak up spectacular vistas.

San Salvador City Tour and El Boquerón National Park including Pupusa Tasting
This was a very informative walking tour. Michelle our tour guide was great. The one thing that I would recommend is that the pupusa tasting happen in the city at a pupuseria, not at the Finca that we went to. for it. Now, the Finca was awesome (view from high on the volcano), and glad we got to enjoy it, but the place was packed and not one local there was eating pupusas. The menu looked great. We learned a lot.

San Salvador City Tour and El Boquerón National Park including Pupusa Tasting
Our guide, Michelle, was wonderful. She gave us great information on the history of El Salvador, the civil war, and how much things have changed for the better in the last year with a new president. She chose beautiful and interesting places to tour in San Salvador. The national park was gorgeous. And we absolutely loved the pupusas.

Our guide was fantastic. It was just me and my girlfriend and we had the whole van to ourselves. Highlight was the church in old town and having lunch in Sochitoto with a nice view of the man-made lake.

Layover tour San Salvador city and Volcano tour El Boqueron National Park
Rafael was a great tour guide for our 1 day lay over! It was highly personalized based on our interests and what we wanted to do in the country. He provides such valuable insight to El Salvador's history. It truly felt like I spent a couple days in El Salvador rather than just a couple of hours. Also, Rafi takes some of the best pictures I have seen!

Osmaro or you can call him “Ozzy”, was my first introduction to El Salvador. He was waiting outside with my name at the airport and as soon as I met him, I felt safe and knew it was going to be a great tour. Ozzy asked me what I wanted to eat and do and we did everything on my list! He is also a great photographer! So don’t be shy to ask him to take photos. He is very easy to talk to and his English was perfect. Thank you so much for my first experience in El Salvador! I came here as a solo female traveler and cannot speak Spanish and I had no issue. I will be back sooner than you think.

I had such a wonderful tour. I did my tour with Osmaro. He arrived for the pick up on time. We visited the volcano first and then later to the city before going to Suchitoto! I highly highly recommend this tour! It was wonderful and a fantastic way to learn about El Salvador! I had the best time!

Most visitors arrive by tour or taxi/rideshare, which takes around 30 minutes. When to get there

The best time to visit El Boquerón is during El Salvador’s dry season, from November to March/April—however, the park is still beautiful during the warmer, wetter summer months. El Boquerón is open daily, but if you’re planning on hiking then it’s worth arriving as close to opening as possible so you can enjoy the cooler morning temperatures.

What makes El Boquerón so special?

El Boquerón is actually a massive stratovolcano that formed inside the caldera of an old volcano that collapsed over 40,000 years ago. Also known as San Salvador volcano and Quezaltepeque, the crater at El Boquerón—which translates as ‘big mouth’—was previously home to a huge caldera lake, but during the volcano’s last eruption in 1917, this was replaced by the cinder cone known as Boqueroncito that you can see in the center of the crater today.
