Lost City tour options abound, with journeys lasting anywhere from three to five days. Private and small-group excursions typically include round-trip transportation and certified guides—the latter is mandatory if you wish to do the hike. Don’t worry about lodging, food, or water either—these are usually also included.
Situated in the Sierra Nevada, the Lost City is neither easy nor possible to access independently. Hikes normally depart from Santa Marta.
While you can get to the Lost City year-round, it’s best to attempt the trek during Colombia’s dry season (October to April). The weather is still hot and humid, but downpours are less likely, and the experience will be much more enjoyable.
If you’re looking for easier-to-access archaeological ruins, Colombia has several options. Venture belowground at Cauca’s Tierradentro ruins; admire anthropomorphic sculptures at San Agustín in Huila; or stick to the Colombian Caribbean and explore the Tairona ruins of Pueblito in Tayrona National Park.
