The Basics

The county of Wiltshire is brimming with Neolithic sites. Day tours departing from London, Glastonbury, and Salisbury typically combine visits to Stonehenge, Avebury Henge, Woodhenge, and West Kennet Long Barrow, which are all part of the Stonehenge and Avebury UNESCO World Heritage Site. Other day tours combine a trip to the Avebury site with visits to picturesque English cities, towns, and villages, such as Georgian Bath or medieval Lacock, known for its wood-framed houses and stone cottages.

Everything is great except weather!
Beautiful country side. The weather is not great. Windy and wet. How can a framer survive with such an unpredictable weather. No wonder there are so many great writers in UK since they don’t have better things to do with such gloomy weather!

The Avebury experience was my favorite but all of the sites were interesting and we were well informed about them by our excellent tour guide.

Stonehenge, Avebury and West Kennet Guided Small Group Tour from London
Good commentary by Michele while he drove us all over Wiltshire to see the different stone circles. Had a great lunch at the Red Lion in Avebury. The coach was comfortable and you can go at your own pace at the different locations. I will warn you the hike to the West Kennet Longbarrows is STEEP. My 70 year old mother had to take a couple breaks to make it to the top.

hello i don''t want my review and any piece of relevant information to be shown in public. So the trip was very nice, we had an informative, entertaining and considerate scottish guide, named Graham, and there was a good mix and contrast of visiting places. Three days in one.

Stonehenge, Avebury, Cotswolds. Small guided day tour from Bath (Max 14 persons)
Such an expanse of history. It was a great day! We started out early at Stonehenge-which is perfect. Avesbury, Lacock, and Castle Comb-gave us views of the countryside, and old villages. We ate a great lunch in a village pub. So glad we did it! Our driver, Tim was great too!!

Review of Bath and Avebury

Bath, Avebury and Lacock Village Small-Group Day Tour from London
The drive from London to Bath was 3 hours and made enjoyable by our driver - Graham. Great knowledge of the area, answered all questions and made the trip enjoyable. Bath is simply amazing and to think the Romans had created these buildings for public use close to 2000 years ago (60-70) AD - blows my mind. Then to see the 2000+ year old Stone henge around Avebury - wow- Excellent trip.

Would be perfect with a bit more time

Stonehenge, Avebury and West Kennet Guided Small Group Tour from London
The order of the stops was perfect but we could have used about a half hour longer at Stonehenge to see the visitor center exhibits, and a quick stop at Woodhenge would have been nice as well. It would have made a longer day but it would be worth it - the Stonehenge visitor center wasn’t closing when we left.

Bath, Avebury and Lacock Village Small-Group Day Tour from London
Graham was an EXCELLENT driver/tour guide. We've been to London many times so this trip, we travelled outside over our two week stay. This was our favorite outing. Bath is expect to be great... and it is. Avebury I'd never heard of but was one of my favorite stops. If you want to see old England... not the tourist stuff, so this. And again, Graham was funny, knowledgeable, played a fabulous music mix of all English artists. Great, great outing.

We loved our day with Laurence

Bespoke private tours of Stonehenge and Avebury by car with local guide
Traveling with my adult children (24 & 22). Both wanted to see Stonehenge. I found this tour, & we were all happy I did. Laurence took us to so many interesting places & explained them so well. My 22 year old does not enjoy history. He did that day, he's been telling all his friends what he learned & saw. My 24 year old LOVES history & geology & she could have spent weeks with Laurence, he had so much knowledge to share. He really did it in such a relatable way, not enough positive words to describe our day with him. Without this tour we would have seen Stonehenge, but all the other locations like Avebury stone circles, wooden formations, white horse carving in the hillside, the adorable cafe for lunch, the Salisbury Cathedral, the Magna Carta and more, we would have missed. We all learned a lot & had so much fun. My kids kept joking as we went around London, if we had Laurence with us maybe we would understand more about the interesting things we were seeing in the city. Fabulous experience, I highly recommend!

History and Highlights of Avebury

Today in Avebury, only 30 original stones remain standing, though pillars mark the places where other stones once stood. It is thought many of the original stones were removed in the Middle Ages by religious zealots who wanted to wipe out evidence of England’s pagan past. Other stones were pilfered in the 18th century and used to build houses in the vicinity, some of which can still be seen across the fields. Some stones to look out for: the huge Swindon Stone, which has never been toppled, and the Barber Surgeon Stone, under which the skeleton of a man was unearthed. The tools he was buried with indicate that he was a barber-cum-surgeon.
