The Basics

Aside from being a popular vacation spot, Hamilton Island makes a strategic basecamp for exploring Whitsunday Islands or cruising the Great Barrier Reef.

Most visitors opt for half- and full-day cruises from Port Airlie, which include beach time at Hamilton Island and a stop at Whitehaven Beach in neighboring Whitsunday Island. Island tours typically take in highlights, such as Catseye Beach, Passage Peak, Wild Life Hamilton Island park, and One Tree Hill.

Fun day for all
Great day out. Food onboard and at the Marina Tavern was great. Good day out, but the sea can get a bit choppy so taken sea sick tablets if you are prone to motion sickness. Whitehaven and Hamilton Island are beautiful. There is a free bus on Hamilton Island to drive you around which was great.

Whitehaven beach boat cruise except for the announcements and commentary difficult to hear. Instructions over all weren't clear. Not much to see or do on Hamilton Island -mornington beaches clearer and over all better.

Whitehaven Beach and Hamilton Island Cruise
Hamilton is a lovely place to spend the day. There are quaint shops and a good choice of restaurants. While I’m glad that I saw Whitehaven, it was an extremely hot day and I was happy to leave. As I’ve seen so many gorgeous beaches in Australia and NZ,, Whitehaven was not that special, although the sand is lovely.

This is a DIY experience at Hamilton Island which was perfect for me. I hit a trail and hiked to a nice viewpoint. Decent lunch on the island there. Whitehaven Beach was amazing and there were plenty of activities there. Great crew and staff - very friendly and helpful.

When to Get There

You can visit Hamilton any time of year, but the most popular time is summer (January and February) when it’s advisable to book flights, tours, and accommodation in advance. Average day temperatures are still 73°F (23°C) in winter, making it possible to swim and snorkel year-round. This is also the time to spot migrating whales along the coast.
