The Basics

Harajuku’s top sights include Yoyogi Park and Omotesando and Takeshita-dori shopping streets. These areas, where the colorfully presented youth typically hang out, are the best for people-watching and street photography. Also in Harajuku is the Meiji Shrine (Meiji-jingu), Tokyo’s grandest Shinto shrine, which was constructed in 1920. The atmospheric shrine is surrounded by forest and serene gardens and houses a memorial hall dedicated to Emperor Meiji, the man many credit with the modernization of Japan.

Sightseeing tours of Tokyo typically include a stop in Harajuku. If you want something more specialized, your options include walking tours of the area that focus on street fashion, architecture, and even kawaii food, or food with kawaii (cute) presentation—perfect for social media.

Awesome
Awesome time. Meet up was easy. So glad we had a guide for this trip because we were able to see and do things we wanted without the language barrier. The animal cafe was awesome my daughter loved it. The art coffee cafe was great and impressive; they are able to create any picture given. Our host was very sweet and took us to quirky spots which was the favorite of my daughter. It was a great tour and great service. Thank you

Half-day Kawaii Tour in Harajuku
I had a wonderful time with Yumi guiding me through Harajuku. We saw a lot of cool places thay I never would have found without her. Note that, instead of the Owl Café, we went to Harajuku Zoo Land (not that there was a problem with that; I had so much fun!). I highly recommend this tour.

Harajuku and Shibuya Evening Walking Tour
Goto-San led us around Ginza, Harajuku, and Shibuya. Sunday was a good day for this as we saw the cosplay (costume display) in the park. We also walked in the beautiful temple park and around the temple. We had a drink at the Shibuya Crossing View and looked down at the busy crossing, in addition to actually making the crossing. Goto-san gave us lots of cultural information and tips on where to eat. This is a great way to experience Tokyo in the evening, if you enjoy lots of walking. Highly recommend.

A very interesting tour. Fumiko was lovely and showed me very interesting places that I don't think I would have seen in my own. I loved the Owl Cafe.... so cute.

Half-day Kawaii Tour in Harajuku
This was a really nice introduction to Harajuku. Yuki was a wonderful guide and really tried to adapt the tour to what I was interested in. It was great having her as a guide because she was able to translate Japanese for me so I could just enjoy the places on the itinerary. We visited a lot of unique places and I got to see exactly what I wanted in Harajuku, as well as some other places. i highly recommend taking this tour!

Half-day Kawaii Tour in Harajuku
Ariko-san was an amazing guide who not only showed me around Harajuku, but also took me to see places in Shibuya. I had an great time trying new foods as well and the owl café was a truly unforgettable experience. Before the tour I was a little unsure about visiting an animal café, but I could see that the owls are well taken care of and very happy at the café. The staff were also very patient in answering all my questions and Ariko kindly translated for me. I recommend this tour.

When to Get There

Harajuku hums with energy seven days a week, but for the best people-watching get there on a Sunday afternoon, when youngsters gather in and around Yoyogi Park to pose in their outlandish outfits. Yoyogi Park is particularly attractive in spring when the cherry trees are in bloom.

Street Photography

Outlandishly dressed youngsters flock to Harajuku to be seen. Typically, they will happily pose for photos without expecting payment, but it is always polite to ask first if it is OK to take their photo by saying “Shashin totte mo ii desu ka?”
