The basics

Few travelers to DC leave without seeing the Lincoln Memorial. Whether you’d like an up-close encounter or want to see it from afar, the site can be visited as part of most Washington DC tours, including a tour of the National Mall, a morning monuments tour, a DC night tour, and a bus tour combined with a cruise on the Potomac River.

Luxury Sight See DC City Tour with Potomac River Cruise or Jefferson Memorial
This was a well run, well hosted “on-off” bus tour, with, as expected, only 10-15 minutes at each attraction. This particular tour was heavy on military sights: WWll Memorial, Vietnam, Korean, Iwo Jima, War memorials, MLK, FDR, Lincoln memorials, and a very pleasant 45” boat ride down the Potomac giving us a different perspective on several of the sights. It was a necessarily slightly rushed experience just by its nature-but interesting as an overview of this part of D.C. It included a lunch break of almost an hour and a half on the waterfront. Our driver, Chris, was really good, navigating through traffic about as well as I’ve ever seen. Not risky, but decisive and always seeming to make the right move at the right time. Our guide, Tyrone, was great. Interesting, numerous, well trained at keeping things moving, and very knowledgeable. So, in short, we more than got what we paid for. Recommend.

Tyrone and Chris were excellent!! They livened the trip up and added excitement to the historical facts. They had great recommendations and were easy to talk to!!! Husband and I had actually gone to some of the spots the night prior, but going in the daytime with Tyrone and Chris the sights were more significant bc we could actually hear the facts about the sights and fully appreciate the thoughtfulness put into them.

This tour of the various monuments was wonderful! Our tour guide was very friendly and knowledgeable. He also made sure we knew if a particular stop was very walk intensive. This gave people to option of staying on the bus if they didn't feel they could handle the amount of walking for that particular stop.

The tour itself was great. Larry was amazing. Just wish there was more time to visit the gift shops. Also the guy Zuma that verifies the trips told my family that they did not do hotel pickups after we had confirmed this three times with customer service. He was rude and quite aggressive over the phone.

When to get there

The Lincoln Memorial is free and open to the public 24 hours a day throughout the year. To have the Lincoln Memorial mostly to yourself, visit early in the morning, especially during winter. The best views of the National Mall and the reflecting pool from the memorial can be seen in the spring (especially during cherry blossom season) and the fall, when the surrounding foliage is at its most atmospheric. Visiting at night will allow you to see the monument lit up.

What to look for at the Lincoln Memorial

While the statue of Abraham Lincoln is the focal point of the Lincoln Memorial, there are several other features to see during your visit. Above the 36 Corinthian columns are two rows of state names. The lower row lists the 36 states within the US at the time of Lincoln’s death, while the upper row lists the 48 states within the US when the memorial was dedicated in 1922. A bronze plaque on the plaza level recognizes Alaska and Hawaii. In the center of the last landing, before the statue chamber, is an engraving marking the spot where Martin Luther King, Jr., delivered his “I Have a Dream” speech. Inside the statue chamber, to Lincoln’s right, is the text of the Gettysburg Address and, above it, a painting entitled Emancipation.
