Unforgettable experience
Denis_T, Mar 2023
The hike is long and very difficult, especially when weather isn't right. I had rain and hail for half of the time, but seeing the volcano eruption trumps everything. It's one of those things you will never forget! Highly recommend OX because they are wonderful humans and big shout out to the guide Romeo.
Vamos!

What an Experience!!
Rehana_S, Feb 2023
I am so glad that I booked with OX Expeditions. I missed the meeting the day before which could have helped me mentally prepare for what's to come. The staff was extremely helpful from providing extra gear, a really great camping site and food. What really touched me was when we were hiking down from the summit after the sunrise and they could see I was struggling. One of the local guides grabbed my arm and helped run down the very slippery and steep part of the hike. After that we were supposed to take out all the sand from our shoes. I told the local guide I couldn't because my hands were too cold and I couldn't move them even after wearing gloves. He told me to sit down and helped me take out the sand from my shoes. They were all extremely kind. A few suggestions if you are planning on going on this hike. They do provide extra gear like large backpacks, gloves, hats jackets, headlamps (get the warm gear if you don't bring your own. You will need it). I also suggest bringing clothes you can layer as throughout the hike you tend to feel really hot then really cold esp when you go to the summit for sunrise. That way you can layer on or take off clothes as needed. In addition to this bring a mask/ scarf to cover your mouth and nose to prevent inhaling dirt. Other things to bring, Sunscreen, hat, lip moisture, band aid, Extra wet wipes, mini deodorant, toothbrush and paste. Extras: Mini portable hand warmer, portable charger for phone.
Beautiful landscape, expensive service
Antonio_C, Nov 2022
The service provided is good and probably one of the best base camps in the area, with wooden cabins. The food provided up in the mountain is very basic. We carry our own water and we carry the food they provide to us all the way up. The guides don’t carry explain anything related to nature, local communities or geology. They just escort the long hike. I had a good time overall and I was lucky with the weather. But I definitely think the price of this tour is wayyyy too high for what it offers.
Great hike

Fantastic, challenging, worthwhile experience! We had a really incredible guide and highly recommend OX
Lava!!!! Amazing but tough hike. Worth it!
Crystal_R, Aug 2022
This was a tough hike. The altitude and incline were serious. But I went for a challenge! Guides and staff were very nice and professional. I opted for the porter to carry my bag up. I went in June and it was very cold at night. The Lava was unbelievable! The best experience! It erupted almost every 10minutes. Big group. Met ppl from all over the world and made some new friends.
Professional, challenging and a unique experience
Fiona_L, Aug 2022
This trip is not for the faint hearted but absolutely worth it. It is a unique hike and overnight camping to watch an active volcano erupting. It is very well run and I felt in good hands considering it was my first time camping. You need good fitness level for this hike, positive attitude and lots of extra layers for the over night stay.
Go in the dry season
Katarzyna_G, July 2022
The whole experience of hiking a volcano and watching a sunrise from the base camp was super exciting and the group was great! However, I think that the OX guide couldn't care less about our experience - he was too focused on the pace and completing his goals. He does it twice a week and you can tell, he's become immune. In the base camp he and the local guides just left us alone for hours. It's still unclear to me why we had to wait until the evening to eat dinner after arriving in the camp around 3pm and just sitting by the fire for hours - really thankful for the group, the people were amazing - we were all hungry tho, eating up our snacks. Prepare yourself for the cold - it is very cold up there. The guides set up fire and stuff but it might be difficult to sleep for some (they provide sleeping bags and you sleep in a simple cabin but it is cold). Prepare yourself that you might not make it all the way to the summit - our guide decided to turn around because of the difficult weather conditions. In the rain season you might also not see the eruptions from Fuego. We were lucky to see them for about 30 minutes but if you go in the dry season, I'm sure a night-long spectacle is awaiting you. - Go in the dry season :) :) :) - Get a porter to carry your bakcpack - they want you to bring 4liters of water - it's crazy heavy. You'll support local people and local guides that way (they help carrying backpacks if there are no porters available). - You will have a great time :)
Life changing

Ox expeditions - Catenango Overnight 19th March 2022 Rating 10 / 10 Very professional guides, very friendly and suppo
RICHARD_H, Mar 2022
Ox expeditions - Catenango Overnight 19th March 2022 Rating 10 / 10 Very professional guides, very friendly and supportive Lots of extra kit( jackets, fleeces, hats gloves etc) available at no extra charge. Plenty of breaks during hike. Base camp very well set up with tents facing Volcan Fuego. Toilet very much appreciated. Seating area and shelter great for eating and socialising. Loved being around the camp fire. The hiking was the most challenging I've ever done and the buzz from getting up to the summit and then seeing sunrise followed by an eruption from Fuego was the icing and cherry on the cake. I would recommend Ox expeditions to anybody wanting an awesome experience in Guatemala. Kind regards Richard Harris
Awesome!

I enjoyed my trip with OX. They’re very organized and provided a majority of things we needed (bag, sleeping bag, mat, warm clothing, food). The guides are well knowledgeable. I highly recommend this company if you’re considering hiking Acatenango overnight
