Jade Workshop Review - March 2023

Sassy, our instructor, was phenomenal! She explained each step of the process to creating our Jade pieces and the safety of each machine we used. We started by choosing our Jade colour, stencilling onto our chosen Jade piece, and then started by cutting out our Jade shapes. She gave us a tour of the Jade museum after our class. And then finished off with our Maya symbol reading. AMAZING stop in Antigua. You must do this! Well worth the money.

We had the best time carving our own jade pieces at Casa del Jade. There was a quick tour and explanation of the types of jade and specifically about Guatemalan jade. In the workshop, Cesar helped us choose our pieces, carve them, and polish them. This was a great family activity.

Unique experience but wouldn't do it again

This was a very unique experience and I'm glad I did it.....once. It's a bit misleading because it says you get to design your own jewelry...when in reality you have to pick from one their designs (so you can't design a heart, etc....) so it's not completely true. We were also told that as you cut your jewelry into the proper shape, that don't have to worry about slicing or hurting your fingers if they touch the blade wheel... and while that was true if you touch your fingers in the middle of the blade, it wasn't true if you happened to nick your finger or knuckles against the corner of it...several times I accidently touched my knuckles to the side of the blade which hurt, and then actually got a very minor cut in my knuckle. Still, I don't regret the tour and I'm glad I did it....it was a once in a life time opportunity to see what the jewelers had to go through to create beautiful jade pieces.

Memorable Experience

Carving our own jade was one of the most memorable experience throughout our Antigua trip. Eric, our instructor, was extremely patient and informative. He also spoke perfect English which made the entire experience less stressful. 😅 Priscilla, the lady who showed us around the museum, was also extremely helpful and informative, and taught us a lot about the history of jade particularly in Guatemala and the Mayan culture. We would highly recommend this experience to others.

After a short tour through the store's museum for a history of Guatemalan jade, we were led to the jade workshop. The guide helped us pick our jade color and shape pattern. He then instructed in cutting and polishing the jade. Even with modern machinery it was hard work, but fun. One of the highlights of our trip to Guatemala.

We had an amazing experience!!! We were paired with Sassy (sp?) and Oswaldo (sp?). Sassy was our tour guide and went over the differences of jade with us and helped guide the way of picking our jade and shape. Oswaldo has been working with jade 30+ years and he showed us how to carve and shave down the jade as well as shine it. It was an overall great experience that we got a souvineer with at the end! Sassy and oswaldo then walked us over to the near by capuchin as church to see some Antiguan history.

Everyone here is so very helpful and patient. The instructions were precise and I found the making of the Jade piece was very relaxing. This was my 2nd visit and they still had my picture from my previous visit on the picture wall in the Jade room. Impressive

We did the jade carving on the day we were leaving Guatemala. Had an evening flight so did the morning class. We should've done this earlier! It was so much fun to learn about the history and culture of jade, then we got to make our own jewelry (jade only). Reach out to the TO - there are actually more class varieties available. If you are looking to shop for some jade, check their store out as well. Lots of selection and the price range is better than most other jade factories/stores in Antigua.

I wouldn't say this was exactly "carving" Jade as much as it was polishing. It was still a good experience but I was expecting a different end product. I ended up with a fairly nice sized teardrop shaped pendent which was probably worth the $50 paid. It is a beautiful store and you do learn about the Jade mined in this area.
