Please be waiting in your accommodation's lobby or outside no later than this time to avoid missing your pick up. Guides have multiple pick-ups so can on occasion run up to 10 minutes late. Guides cannot wait for late passengers as it will mean the entire group is at risk of missing out, so please be waiting and ready (5-10 minutes before your listed time is highly recommended) Group 1: 20 minutes before tour start time. Grand Mercure Auckland (no longer exist there is Movenpick hotel instead) please be waiting at Movenpick if you selected Ports of Auckland as your pick up location Group 2: 15 minutes before tour start time. What an AMAZING DAY!! John our tour guide was amazing. The small group was perfect and he made sure everyone was having a good time. It’s about a 2 hour drive but he made it go by fast with conversation, jokes and music. The actual tour (you have a separate tour guide from Hobbiton) was great and John met us toward the end to make sure we got some great pics!! It really is a magical place, even if you’re not the biggest fan of LOTR. A MUST SEE!

Takes nearly 2 hours from Auckland, and your driver needs to talk 40% less. Info on land, animals and history ok, personal history 4 generations isn’t really needed. Tour at Hobbitown was fine, lovely day and nice walk about.

Going on an Adventure to Hobbiton!

The visit to Hobbiton was great! The driver was very friendly and informative. He explained that he had prepared a larger vehicle for this trip but the company switched vehicles on him overnight which unfortunately did not have a working microphone so hearing some of the information he gave was very difficult and the vehicle was a little cramped. In no way is this the fault of the driver though. At Hobbiton, it was pretty amazing to see the set just like in the movies. The guide there did a great job as well telling us about the site and process of filming the scenes. We got to enjoy a complimentary beverage which was tasty too! Overall it was a great experience

From pick up to drop off, it was a great experience with Cheeky Kiwi. Our driver Simon gave us a lot of information about Auckland and the area on the way and was overall very helpful and friendly. You will team up with other groups at the movie set though. So the small group is bigger in the end. But to me it was not less fun. We were lucky to have a super cool guide at Hobbiton, too ☺️

Understand that the tour of Hobbiton itself is the same for everyone regardless of which tour company you use to get there! When you read reviews, if the review is talking about how great Hobbiton was, that has little to nothing to do with the tour they are reviewing. Some tours include food (not this one), some include the ticket to get in to Hobbiton (a pass-through cost, basically), but the real point of all of them is the transportation to get you there. Make sure you understand what you are getting before you book. (This is a clarification for those reading reviews, not a criticism of any particular tour.) In this case, the price of the tour included transportation to Hobbiton, the ticket to tour Hobbiton, and one bottle of water which was given out when we first arrived at Hobbiton. We were picked up at the appointed time at the designated spot, which was a half block from our hotel. There were roughly six different pick-up points on this particular day and I believe we were the third stop. As a result we ended up sitting a couple rows back in the van, which contained seating for maybe 12 people in a 1 x 2 configuration (one seat on one side and two on the other with an aisle between, plus a seat in front with the driver). By the time all pick-ups were done, every seat was full. We drove to Hobbiton and were given around 25 minutes to buy our own lunch at the café by the entrance. Then we were given a Hobbiton ticket, we queued up for the Hobbiton tour, and took the tour (which was fun). Afterward we had about a half hour at the gift shop, which was plenty (the shop is not large). Then we loaded back up into the van and drove back to Auckland. There were more drop-offs than pick-ups as some of the people wanted to be dropped off at other locations, which was fine. We were dropped off at the same spot we were picked up. During the drive to and from Hobbiton, the driver provided a small amount of commentary about the area, but most of the time American oldies music was playing. The driver seemed very personable and willing to help. He did a good job of keep track of the people in “his” group, as there were many tour groups at Hobbiton that day. He also explained that he tried to take routes that were picturesque and would avoid traffic as much as possible. The van ride itself was uncomfortable. The van had a great deal of body roll, so every corner and curve of the very winding roads caused us to feel like we were being tossed around in the seats. The seats were small and difficult to sit in for anyone tall or with long legs or who weighs more than average. In addition, the van was uncomfortably warm. The driver tried to adjust the temperature but it didn’t help much. This tour is most suitable for people who are young (don’t mind the rough ride), small (no long legs, tall height, or greater than average weight), and do not have any issue with motion sickness. Anyone else may want to look elsewhere for a more comfortable ride. If I were to take a tour like this again, I would disregard the number of people included in the group as that made no difference at all, and concentrate instead on the type of vehicle used.

I loved the country side , flowers and butterflies. The setting was so special. Our driver Stewart was excellent. He had vast knowledge of the area to and from the tour. His stories were interesting . The hobbit houses were special and the tours were spaced apart so you did not feel crowded. I would highly recommend this tour.

Never seen or read LOTR

I have never seen, nor read, Lord of the Rings or The Hobbit. I was looking for an interesting tour out of Auckland. Hobbiton was spectacular, larger and more beautiful than I could have asked for or imagined. The food at The Shire was tasty and reasonably priced. The tour ended with free cider, beer or grog enjoyed by a roaring fire. Large umbrellas were available for free, and what rain we had did not affect the photos. Two hours south of Auckland, a tour is the best way to go. Highly recommend this Hobbiton tour.
