On a guided tour of the Hobbiton Movie Set, see recognizable scenery created for the 'Lord of the Rings' and 'The Hobbit' films and learn the secrets and stories behind the creation of Middle-earth. Take in stellar views of the Kaimai Ranges as you visit meticulously crafted sets including Hobbit Holes, the Mill, and the Green Dragon Inn, where you can even enjoy a specially brewed drink fit for a Baggins.

After the tour, trade Hobbit trivia with your fellow travelers over a Kiwi-style lunch.

Next, embark on an underground adventure at the famous Waitomo Glowworm Caves, where thousands of tiny worms illuminate caverns thanks to natural phosphorescent properties. Watch the mesmerizing natural light show while gliding through the cave on a boat, and learn about the area’s natural and cultural history from a guide—likely a descendant of the Maori chief who originally discovered the caves. You also explore on foot Cathedral Cave, known for its impressive acoustics.

I sense from your comments that you had a very special day. You clearly are a LOTR fan but as you experienced you do not have to be to enjoy this simply magical and enchanting location. This is a stand alone tour and interestingly half the 1 million guests that visit the Movie Set annually have never read any of the Tolkein books or watched any of the movies

As a big LOTR fan, going to Hobbiton was non-negotiable on my trip to Auckland and held up to every expectation. I was a bit nervous taking a guided tour with a group as a solo traveler but our guide Mike and the rest of the people I met within the group helped me get over that quick. I didn’t really have any expectations when it came to the Waitomo Caves but oh boy were they well worth the visit. The only words I have for the day on this tour are simply magical. If you do any guided tour on your stay to Auckland, I would make it this one! Thanks again to Mike for guiding us along the way!

This was the most amazing experience and a must do for anyone travelling to NZ for the first time, even non-Hobbit/LOTR fans. We had the best tour guide, Mike, who was so knowledgeable, helpful, and kind. That man deserves a raise. Truly made the experience memorable. The views are absolutely gorgeous and the drive is so scenic. Lunch is super yummy too! We also had a really lovely group of people. I had the best day and my brother also really enjoyed it. The glow worm cave was also really cool and it was awesome to learn more about the Māori culture. Everyone must do this tour!!

Like you, I think the Waitomo Glowworm Caves are the most amazing attraction in New Zealand. This beautiful feat on nature is simply spellbinding; so not a surprise that these are the oldest attraction in New Zealand with the first guided tour undertaken by the legendary Maori guide, Tane Tinorau way back in 1887. Is there any better place to be than in the boat on the river slowly gliding silently through the caverns of the Caves and you look aloft and see the thousands and thousands of glowworms shining down on you? This was one of those days that will stick with me for my entire life. Every single thing about it was perfect. Our tour guide was Danny and he was spectacular. He had such a great energy and taught us a lot of interesting things about Aotearoa New Zealand. He was genuinely interested in everybody's reasons for being here and you can just tell that he truly enjoys this job. Hobbiton and the Waitomo caves were both spectacular, and the road trip as a whole brought us through some of the most beautiful scenery I've ever seen. Hobbit town is amazing took me straight back to the two classic books I have read many times and seen the films over and over. Just arrived back home after a vacation in New Zealand with my wife and this "Hobbiton Movie Set and Waitomo Glowworm Caves" tour was the highlight of our trip! Here is my long, detailed review of this tremendous company. We were picked up early from our hotel by our driver / guide, Mike. He was AWESOME!! He was punctual, funny and entertaining. The van was comfortable and had air conditioner. We were the first group picked up and we made 4-5 stops and then headed on a 2 - 2 1/3 hour drive to Hobbiton and the entire time was a smooth and safe ride. Mike was funny, telling stories and pointing our things we wouldn't have noticed. The tour company does EVERYTHING for you, we didn't have to worry about a thing. All tickets were purchased and we had enough time to grab a snack before the tour, go on gift shop, and then go on the tour (i have never seen any of the Hobbit or LOTR movies and i LOVED the tour). Mike also met us at the green dragon pub and took pics for us. After that we went to the Waitomo Glowworm caves which left us speechless. After finishing up Hobbiton we went to a nice lunch place with great food. I was nervous when I saw how long the tour was but never once did I yearn for it to end. I couldn't recommend this tour enough. Hopefully you're lucky to have Mike as your driver / guide

The most amazing trip ever! I’ve been travelling for 4 months now, so it’s fair to say I’ve seen lots of pretty cool places, but the glow worm cave has been the best attraction I’ve ever seen in my life! I wish I could do it all again. The hobbiton tour was very beautiful too! Lots of food options for lunch, and the bus is very comfortable for the long drive. Mike, our tour guide, was absolutely amazing, and went above and beyond to make sure we were all happy and got lots of pictures! He was a pleasure, and you could tell he loves showing off this beautiful country 😊

Had an absolutely incredible day on this tour I would highly recommend. Great way to see two of the most wonderful places on the same day. Our tour guide Mike was very friendly, informative, and well organized; everything ran smoothly. I will remember this day for the rest of my life for sure! One thing to note for yourself if Hobbiton is a priority for you: as per the schedule on the tour page the Hobbiton tour itself is the two hour option (see more options outlined on the official Hobbiton website). I can definitely say that the two hour option was personally enough time to see the Shire, but I do wish there was a little more time to relax and absorb the atmosphere at the Green Dragon Inn at the end (we only had about 15min or so to take photos and enjoy a drink/snack). Overall I do not regret the decision to take this tour given my own personal time table, but if you are staying in or closer to Hamilton NZ and have more time you may wish to select a different Viator offering for more time there.

We agree that our tour to the 2 most famous and iconic attractions in New Zealand is a truly unique experience. The Hobbiton Movie Set Tour is a set 2 hour experience (determined by the Hobbiton Management) not us so every tour is 2 hours as they advertise though from 1 December 2023, this will be 2.5 hours with the Hobbiton New Experience with the new construction currently underway; so in total you are currently in the Shire for about 3 hours. Like you, we would love all our guests to stay there 3 or 4 hours or more; but it is a set 2 hours, regardless of where you travel from or how you get there. Is there any better place to sit and relax and enjoy an ale, stout, cider of ginger beer than at the Green Dragon. On our tour this is normally closer to about 25 minutes , where we additionally try to assist guests with photo guidance. It was a privilege hosting you. Thank you sincerely for choosing our tour.

So worth it. Even if you’re not a fan of LOTR, the Hobbiton movie set is beautiful and worth a visit. The caves were beautiful as well, and it was lovely learning a little bit of NZ history. I was worried I’d be hungry (or have to pee and there’d be less options to) on this long tour but to ease your concerns, that is not an issue at all on this trip. There’s a cafe at Hobbiton where you can get sandwiches/pastries/coffee. I read some reviews that said they didn’t have a lot of time there which is weird to me - I had lots of time! Spent forever in the gift shop and still had time to use the washroom and visit the cafe. Then we did our guided tour of Hobbiton, and had plenty of time to take photos and look around. Also didn’t feel rushed at the Green Dragon (where you can again buy a scone/pastry at the end of the tour). Then we drove to lunch. Yes, it’s a simple lunch, but who’s doing this tour for the food?! I still enjoyed it!! Options of little meat & veggie pies or sandwiches, as well as a sweet treat of your choice, and beverage of your choice. I got the minced beef pie and it was so good!! I was stuffed after. Again, another opportunity to use the washroom (if you also worry about that stuff like me). Then you go to the caves. They ALSO have washrooms, a cafe, and a gift shop. So you never don’t have an opportunity to use the washroom, grab a snack/water/coffee, or a souvenir! If anything I’d just recommend bringing water, and maybe a pastry for the first 2+ hour drive into Hobbiton. ☺️ If you’re in Auckland - this is a must do!! I will add - this is not a wheelchair friendly experience. They do list that on their site, but sometimes people miss that. You need to be able to walk because there are hills and lots of steps. Just in case. And… if you get Danny, you’re in for a great time!! A very, very lovely man. Full of knowledge and funny too!!

We really appreciate these detailed comments. Yes, they are bathrooms. as you mention, throughout the day at good intervals. Normally we are in the Shire for about 3 hours so on arrival at Hobbiton, you normally have 40 odd minutes to visit the Hobbiton store, go to the bathroom, have a coffee and snack etc. You are right that it is a walking tour, but gentle and easy; we can access a golf cart for any guests seriously challenged is this regard, but you must let us know well in advance as there are only 2 and they (free) need to be reserved well in advance. We include lunch in our tour. We think we are the only tour operator that does this on this tour; it is a cafe style lunch, but really yummy. It is not a la cart restaurant style as this would impact the pricing as we try to keep the prices, which we believe are the most competitive, on our 20 tours as low as we possibly can. This trip was amazing! Geoff was our guide and he was great! He told us so much about New Zealand and it's people, the flora and fauna and everything in between. He definitely made the trip that much better. Hobbiton was a dream come true. So well taken care of and had great, knowledgeable staff and guides. Lunch was tasty with so many sweet and savory options, cakes and tarts, sandwiches and burgers and so many different tasty pies, I highly recommend the ale and steak! Waitomo Glowworm caves was beautiful! Thousands of little blue stars in a pitch black cave, stunning! All the staff are Maori and you can tell they are very proud of this area! So many on my tour hadn't even seen/read The Lord of the Rings (😮) and they still enjoyed this this trip!
