What To Expect

Begin your tour with a guide meet and greet at Friedrichstrasse train station. Ride to the Sachsenhausen Memorial and Museum in Oranienburg.

More than 200,000 people were imprisoned in Sachsenhausen between 1936 and 1945. At first, the prisoners were primarily political opponents of the Nazi regime. However, people that were defined by the National Socialists as racially or biologically inferior were later included.

By 1939, there were a large number of citizens from the occupied European states imprisoned here. Tens of thousands of people died of starvation, disease, forced labor and mistreatment, or they were victims of the systematic extermination by the Schutzstaffel, or the SS. Thousands of other prisoners died during the “death marches” that followed the evacuation of the camp in April of 1945. At that time, approximately 3,000 sick prisoners, along with the doctors and nurses who had stayed behind in the camp, were freed by Soviet and Polish soldiers.

This tour features a visit to the punishment cells, gallows, gas chambers and burial pits located inside the prison. Hear stories of prisoner bravery as well as the chilling atrocities that took place at the camp, which now serves as a national memorial to the prisoners who lived and died here. Your tour ends with a return train trip to Berlin.

Well done Dr Thomas
Bernadette_A, Sept 2023
Seeing camp. Explanation on processes. A little bit more time would have been good to really go through the camp.

You have to do this tour with Hannah!
Sylvie_A, Sept 2023
Even though this tour was very emotionally challenging, it is definitely an experience to live, especially with our guide, Hannah, which is simply exceptional. Very knowledgeable about the history of this camp, she managed to captivate the whole group throughout the day. She was also very attentive to the group (before, during and after the tour making sure everyone was OK and how to get back to our starting point or where we wanted to go) and did not hesitate to take breaks so that we could ask questions. Thank you, Hannah!
Response from Host, Sept 2023

Leanne_M, Sept 2023
Our tour guide was Georgia. She was knowledgeable and informative but more than that she was so empathetic to the trauma that real people suffered here. Why can’t we learn as humans that we are all equal, no better than anyone else.
Response from Host, Sept 2023

Insightful and sobering
David_C, Sept 2023
The tour was led by a very inspired Gorge who packed the tour with facts for the entire trip. One thing to note is that the tour is much longer than the advertised 3 hours as there is a train trip of at least and hour there and back. This need to be added to the itinerary for the length of the tour which was most of the day. Apart from that it is highly recommended. Sobering.
Response from Host, Sept 2023
Dear David, Thanks for sharing your expereince on Insider's Sachsenhausen memorial tour with the fantastic George. Thank you for your heartfelt review. Great tour with great tour guide (Georg)!!! Do remember to bring water, umbrella and sunscreen
HsuanCheng_K, Sept 2023
It's a little bit physically tiring as it's a 6hrs tour with quite some walks but it's totally worthy. The stories, lessons and architectures behind all those camps and barracks are really mind-blowing. My tour guide Georg did a great job explaining and sharing all those history moments. Few quotes from him that still resonate with me so well: - Work brings freedom. It's just the freedom back then was death. - These displays are the manifestations of hatred, racism and anti-semitism.
Response from Host, Sept 2023

Highly emotional and moving
Lisa_R, Sept 2023
I found this daytrip to be very informative and emotional. Our tour guide gave us quite an informative detail on the camp. The people involved in it. It was a six hour excursion which was just long enough to hear about the conditions the people had to endure as it was very ioverwhelming. I would highly recommend this trip as being a part of the German history. It was one. I'm glad I went to.

Marissa_M, Sept 2023
Tina was an absolutely incredible guide for the Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp Memorial Tour! I was nervous for the tour and the about of walking after reading some of the reviews but it was really nothing! Tina started off the day by explaining we’d have a 44 minute train, 20 minute walk to the camp, the tour, and then the walk and train ride home. Tina made the travel effortless and provided so many inside stories and memories to the tour. You can really see Tina’s passion for Berlin the more and more you talk with her. Tina truly was an open book to our questions and provided so much knowledge with this history. Excited to book a tour with her again during our next visit to Berlin!
