What To Expect

Ride a bike from summit to sea down the roads of an active volcano. Nearly all of the roads and trails on the tour are downhill, level, and paved, and you have a guide who narrates the area’s mythology, geology and sights.

All the necessary equipment is provided for this Kilauea volcano tour, as are beverages, lunch and a support van if you get tired of biking. After your start at the Visitors Center in the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, ride past lush, tropical rainforests that house hidden, volcanic lava tubes—one of which you can even explore on foot and venture inside. Pass steaming vents, massive craters and barren volcanic terrain, and, if Madame Pele (the volcano goddess) is in the right mood, there’s even the chance you could see lava spilling into the sea.

The landscape at Kilauea Volcano is unlike anywhere in Hawaii, and, since the tour’s support van is always nearby, you can bike for as long as your energy allows and still enjoy all the sights. Or, if you’d prefer to simply ride along and not use a bike at all, you can follow the group on the very same trails while comfortably seated inside.

Your bike ride ends with a lunch with views of the ocean. On the way back to the start point, enjoy a trip to visit the Thurston Lava Tubes. Read the Itinerary for all major points of interest on this tour.

Incredible way to see everything at Volcano National Park. Good exercise if you want or you can use the assist as much as needed. Gives you the ability to get to places you wouldn't have time to walk to or places your car is not allowed to go. Simply amazing and we will do this again. We did the No-guide tour with GPS. Super fun and we highly recommend.

A great way to explore Kilauea crater
steven_d, Apr 2023
It was the perfect way to cover a significant amount of territory around the crater, and adjust the level of physical exertion. I desired with the benefit of the E bike. And, no need to jockey for parking space at the popular points of interest.
Super fun and highly recommended!

Had a great time seeing so much of the park and the volcano by e-bike. Gwen was an excellent tour guide. Loved it!
Exceptional way to see Volcanoes up close.

Our tour guide Gwendolyn was exceptional, giving lessons in volcanology, local culture and history. The ebikes were also a highlight, they had plenty of power for the journey, and could even go without pedaling if that's what your are looking for.

Fun Ride, Great Guide
waltsam, Aug 2019
According to our guide, Chris, we hit the only sunny/partly cloudy day within a week or so. The ride was pretty easy - couple breath-a-little-harder hills; but mostly pleasant. Good pace. We really liked Chris' explanations and stories. The variety of views made the time go quickly. Matt was very helpful with the van and trailer. We appreciated the abundance of water. Lunch was good. Overall, exactly what we'd hoped for!

The tour exceeded our expectations. We enjoyed the ride and were delighted with the amount of information that we were given about the volcano and the lava flow.
Kilauea Volcano Bike Tour was very good

The Kilauea Volcano Bike Tour was very good. I enjoyed the little hike before biking. The guide walked us through part of the park, and explained how it has changed. He also gave information on the vegetation. I enjoyed being able to bike the volcano. It was a very neat experience.

Great guide and good ride. Equipment very good. Fun day overall. Lucnh provided was good. Cost is a bit high, but everything on the Big Island is expensive and they are trying to make up for nearly a year of lost business due to last years volcanic activitiy closing the park.

We had such a wonderful time on the bike ride Pretty and Aaron were the perfect hosts. We really enjoyed riding through the lava fields. Snacks and drinks were provided all along the trip and a great lunch was also provided at a lovely stop on the ocean. We had fun, learned a lot about the history of the island and just plain enjoyed the company. Would highly recommend this and would do it again.

We had a terrific time on the Kilauea Bike Tour. The staff was very helpful when we talked on the phone after booking and then our guides, Aaron and Pretty were great. This was a great way to see the volcano and learn about the island. The bike ride was easy if you ride recreationally, but also had some great downhill areas.

Fantastic bike ride! Such a great way to see the Volcano and surrounding area. Very relaxed and an easy bike ride, when we finished the ride we were left wanting more. Pick up from the cruise terminal was easy and our driver Pretty was very friendly, funny and knowledgeable. Aaron our bike tour guide very friendly and knowledgeable as well. This was a highlight of our trip to Hawaii.

Chris M, Aug 2017
Overall, a good bike ride and tour. Our tour guide was a recent geologist graduate and very knowledgable about the area and the volcanos. I would rate it a 4-5, but unfortunately a few of us experienced a terrible bike crash about half way through. It began to rain during our tour and the guide and van driver did not warn any of us about how slick the road would get. And to make matters worse, the tour guide led the way on the bikes and went way too fast. We hit a turn and 1 bike skidded out and crashed, which caused another biker to swerve into traffic and take a very hard crash on the road four other bikers skidded hard also, and narrowly prevented themselves from taking hard road crashes. This accident obviously ruined 2 of the bikers trip, as they both were bleeding and had large cuts on their legs and arms, and this put a sour mood on the entire tour for the remaining time. I realize accidents can happen, but these experienced tour guides could have easily prevented this by just setting the lead pace at a very slow pace and warning all about the keeping their speeds down on the wet roads. To make matters worse, if you read the review from 2015, another person mentioned this same issue and said his wife broke 2 ribs when she crashed. Therefore, the owner and guides should know about this issue and take measures to prevent it when it is raining.

We had a great time. Our guide was extremely knowledgeable and passionate about the park. The tour was well organized from start to finish. The 25 dollar entrance fee to the park was not included in the price of the tour which we were not notified of at the time of purchase.

Had a great day....but was not as challenging as I was expecting....perhaps my bad for not investigating further....but found far too tame for my liking....Guides were friendly and informative and regular checking back to ensure that all were doing okay.....Would have loved the option of full down hill experience to water where we stopped for lunch....would have been more enjoyable than driving down in van....good for those looking for a leisurely ride ...or those with small kids

We had a lovely day. Our guide was a geologist and very knowledgeable. It was a great way of seeing all the different aspects of the volcano park and we were able to decide on what we want to explore more over the next few day. We were fully supported by a vehicle with another wonderful guide with lots of snacks, water and a lovely lunch. The bikes were in good condition. The whole family had a fantastic time teenagers, young adults and us oldies. The only suggestion we would make is that rather than have lunch at the end of crater road where it is really exposed and no shade to have lunch at the top before going home.

So much fun!! This was our first activity on the island, and it was the perfect way to get a taste of Volcanos National Park. Our guide was fun and knowledgeable, and patient with all types of riders. There were two or three hills that were tougher than others, so be prepared. It's not all completely downhill, but it's not terribly difficult. We did not need jackets at all. The van follows pretty closely behind, so we never felt like we would be stranded if we lost the group that wanted to go faster. Not too much traffic on the roads to avoid. We would do this tour again for sure. The entire national park is a treasure!

This was a great way to explore Volcano National Park. This is a guided bike tour with frequent stops at points of interest such as craters, Lava tube, etc. An easy pace should be manageable for any rider, mostly downhill. Our guide was knowledgeable about the formations and history of the islands. A great way to spend some time.
