It’s widely believed that the sport of surfing was invented here in Hawaii, and the calm waters of Kahalu’u Bay are the perfect spot to learn. During this private Kona surf lesson, you’ll learn from an expert, local instructor how to paddle and balance on the board, and how to stand up, ride the wave, and paddle back out for more. What To Expect

Your private Kona surf lesson begins at a surf shop near Kahalu’u Bay, where you’ll meet your expert local instructor and get properly fitted with a board. You’re also provided with a rash guard and booties to protect your feet and your skin, before strolling across to the nearby beach for an intro lesson in the sand. 

Before you even enter the waves, you’ll learn the proper technique for paddling and where to sit on the board, and how to keep the board from flipping while paddling out towards the waves. Once in the water, your instructor will be there right by your side to help push you into the waves, and provide instructions on how to get from your stomach up to your feet. 

Unless you’re already an experienced surfer, your instructor will help keep you safe from waves that either too large or powerful — focusing instead on the smaller waves where it’s easier to get up and ride. If you have some experience and are trying to hone your skills, the instructor can help provide some tips for maximizing your time on the wave. 

Since every lesson is tailored to your skill level, this Kona surf lesson is the perfect way to get out and enjoy the waves, and see why everyone is completely hooked on surfing in Hawaii.

  • Cut-off times are based on the experience’s local time.
  • This experience requires good weather. If it’s cancelled due to poor weather, you’ll be offered a different date or a full refund.

They are kind and patient with the kids

The boys absolutely loved this - so much they wanted to surf again while on vacation. They were patient with the boys but kept them safe. Give at least 20 minutes to park and pay by mobile and walk to the surf shop. Then go snorkeling in the water as there are TONS of beautiful fish, sea turtles, and much more - don’t forget your snorkel gear!

Both of our kids (12 and 9) felt like this surf lesson was their favorite part of vacation. The instructors were great with kids and we felt like the safety was top notch. Do not miss this tour if your kids love adventure in the water!
