What To Expect

Make your own way to check-in at the Reef Fleet Terminal for the morning departure of the Fitzroy Island high-speed ferry crossing, which generally takes around 45 minutes.

Located only 18.5 miles (30 km) from Cairns, Fitzroy Island lies within the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. Its protected coral reef offers excellent snorkeling from the beach and is home to colorful hard and soft corals, tropical fish, sea turtles and other marine life.

Spend the day as you wish, with options that include snorkeling, swimming and kicking back on the beach. The underwater world offers the rainbow colors of the parrotfish, clown fish darting in and out of anemones, and many other marine critters. On land, you can follow hiking trails through the rainforest and along the coast.

Upgrade to the Activity Pass, a cost-effective option that includes the use of snorkel gear, a glass-bottom boat tour and a delicious picnic lunch. Depending on availability, you can use water floats and other gear for children, making this a family-friendly way option on the island.

We had a great day on the Island and the whole experience from start to finish was first class. We did the glass bottom boat tour and got to see a lot of the coral reef, then my husband did the snorkelling with two marine biologist who gave so much insight into the coral reef and took great care of everyone in the group. Thank you so much, a day that won't be forgotten. If you can do this trip do it, you will not be disappointed.

This was a ferry to Fitroy Island and back. Snorkelling and diving packages are available but you can take your own worth walking to Nudey Beach. Too hot for us to walk elsewhere. Cafe was great and served free iced water.

Was looking forward to this adventure to see the Sea Turtles. It was a success but the snorkelling equipment is subpar. The equipment I was given in the morning was broken but the boat had returned to Cairns so I was not able to snorkel until it returned at noon. When returning the equipment to the team they questioned that it was not something they would give to guests but they did! Additionally, this trip is recommended for those who are strong swimmers as there is no-one there to provide support if you find yourself swimming out into the ocean. Watershoes are also highly recommended to get to Nudey beach.

Everything was on time, the ride was smooth, I was amazed by the skipper skill in parking the catamaran in Cairns harbor. I wish there was a later return so one could spend more time on the island.

An amazing day trip to Fitzroy island is a must when going to cairns!! We had a smooth sailing boat ride to and from the island and were amazed by beautiful scenery and tropical fish once we got in the water to snorkel, the glass bottom boat was a learning experience and the day was spent in the sun on the beautiful clear water!! We absolutely loved it, our highlight from our cairns trip!!

Had a fantastic trip to Fitzroy! The island is beautiful—the crew was great, and it’s just a quick 45 minutes. We didn’t book any snorkel or goggles because we were doing the out reef the next day, so I can’t speak to the quality of the snorkeling. A few recommendations that I wish I knew: if you plan on doing the light house and summit hikes have sneakers (we hiked in flops — so it is a family friendly hike, just wish we had proper footwear). Nudey beach is super cute—you can bring your own cooler and picnic so we would have done that. We ate at Foxy’s bar and got a takeaway six pack. Our boats were on time and comfortably seated. Would definitely recommend this as a day excursion.

Extremely overpriced for the experience. Snorkel gear was so old and not changeable when you get in the water and discover that most leak. Not that it really matter because there really is not much to see. Save your money and take a trip out to the reef.

Trip over was rough but that’s no one’s fault, we had low visibility due to weather conditions so we didn’t see anything much at all. Glass bottom boat was very short and like I said, not much visibility. The island was lovely to walk on the trail through the rainforest area. The cocktails were great at foxys, the tour guide on glass bottom boat was very knowledgeable, it was a nice day but we wouldn’t come back again.

Out of the 3 face masks we were given 2 were broken. You had to pay extra to be given lessons in how to use the snorkel equipment. From the moment we checked on board it was chaos. We weren't sent to the front of the boat to check in for our snorkel equipment, along with everyone else (on a small boat with not a lot of room). Then I was sent to the back of the boat, along with everyone else, to actually pick up our equipment and guess the sizes needed for the 3 people using the equipment. There wasn't much room to try anything on so we didn't and all 3 of us could have sized down. If we had been able to snorkel properly I think it would have been a great experience. The island itself was gorgeous though.

Easy way to travel across to Fitzroy island with option for snorkel gear. The ferry was delayed but still plenty of time on the island. I do recommend getting the 4pm ferry back if possible, as you have plenty of time! The island itself is stunning!
