What To Expect

Find out why the land’s original owners, the Butchulla people, named the island K’gari (paradise) on your full-day tour from Hervey Bay.

Get an early start with pickup at a central meeting point, then catch the ferry to K’gari. Upon arrival, travel in an air-conditioned 4WD coach across the rough roads and sandy beaches of this World Heritage-listed sand island.

Among the highlights, visit picture-perfect Lake McKenzie to take a dip in its clear water or lounge on its white–sand beach. Admire the crystal clear waters of Wanggoolba Creek, located in Central Station, the former headquarters for the island's timber industry. Walk through a rain forest valley with ancient king ferns, towering ghost gum, and pine trees.

On Seventy-Five Mile Beach, drive down the sandy beach and look for birds of prey and migrating humpback whales (July–November). An optional Fraser Island scenic flight is available there (own expense). The coach meets the plane when it lands further down the beach.

Stop at two iconic destinations: the colored sand cliffs of the Pinnacles and the Maheno shipwreck—wrecked during an out-of-season cyclone in 1935. Hear from your guide about local aboriginal legends and the geology behind the technicolor sand formations. Throughout the day, your guide shares informative commentary about the history, flora, and fauna of the island.

Pull into a beach resort for a tasty buffet lunch and catch the ferry back to River Heads in the late afternoon. Your tour ends with drop-off in Hervey Bay.

Traveller Tips

Definitely recommend for first visitors to Fraser Island and someone who has no confidence to drive in sand road like me 😊
Lunch was good, with a variety of salads, perhaps a better selection of desert would be appreciated.
Not only he could drive the sandy roads of Fraser Island (safe but like a racing driver= lots of fun), he knows a mit about the plants, the animals and the stories of the indigenous people.

Gorgeous lake!!

Unfortunately, the air conditioning on the bus did not work. I would have preferred to walk on the beach, or be in an open 4 by 4. The guide was knowledgeable. Lake Mackenzie was beautiful

We booked a tour for Fraser Island the bus never came to pick us up at the hotel as the reception had told us after changing the meeting place. We flew to Brisbane, rented a car to go up to Hervey bay, rented a hotel room for 3 days, and finally took a plane back to Sydney. The costs incurred are significant and we lost 3 days of vacation. The company saw with the hotel for a refund of the tour which I still have not received to date.
Happy for I made the tour😊.

Driving bus through the forest and on the beach after swimming in the McKenzie Lake. Burt, the guide and driver of the bus made the tour extremely good and took care of everyone😊.

felt like daydreaming
Natascha_D, Mar 2023
we‘ve loved every second of this trip! Our guide was the best! He knew everything about this island and it’s surroundings. Lake McKenzie is even better than on the pictures and we also got to see 2 dingos on the way back to the ferry. I would book this experience again and can 1000% recommend it!
Great time on k’gari
Julian_D, Mar 2023
We had an absolutely wonderful time on K’gari with our Tourguides Geoff 👍 i really recommend this tour, you gonna see all the spots you wanna see in a short period of time which i reckon you wouldn’t get to see in a day in a hired vehicle
Great adventure

Had a great time on the day tour led by the very friendly and knowledgable Cameron. Despite a van breakdown, Cameron and the team dealt with his amazingly and it didn’t impact any of our day or our enjoyment. We always felt in safe hands - huge thanks to Cam! A great intro to the island with lovely stops for swimming, highly recommend!
Nice day tour

Have a nice and fun day. Our driver Murray very knowledgeable about Fraser Island and Rainbow Beach. Swimming at Lake Mackenzie is unbelievable. It's wonderful.
Incredible family fun day out, but suitable to everyone, highly recommended

My Wife and I had an amazing day as did the other 30 travelers on the bus, WOW what a ride, our driver (Wayne) was outstanding and added lots of laughs and fun facts all about the island of K’gari. Loved all the activities from drifting down beautiful fresh water creeks to swimming in the most gorgeous fresh water lakes, from start to finish this tour is so full of fun, what an incredible day. Recommend for everyone especially families, 5 star ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Wonderful!
Allan_G, Feb 2023
We had a wonderful time and the guide Wayne was great at serving interesting facts with a good sense of humor! We would have liked a stop less and more time at the other places. The missing star is due to communications about car-seats for children. In the description it's mention as "available" but we didn't get a confirmation from the operator . Luckily we brought our own as it turned out they do not have any . Maybe it should be clearer in the description. But all in all a very good experience - also with 3 kids 😉
Sightseeing tour not remote/adventurous
Rebecca_J, Feb 2023
Hayden was an amazing guide, and the pick up/drop off made the day convenient. The sites were really beautiful but somewhat rushed and crowded. Wish it had been a bit more adventurous or off the beaten path, ie the rainforest walk was a 5 min boardwalk, the creek had about 100 people in it. Overall very expensive, lunch was plenty but not that nice. Great for a first insight into the beauitful island, maybe for older people or families.
Not to be missed

A very informative trip and K’Gari is a truly unique and very special place to visit. Our guide was so knowledgeable and really gave us a very in depth insight into the island
Amazing tour

The lake is beautiful! The sand is white and soft and the blue of the water is very light. Also did the little plane ride and it was worth is.
Seeing the trees and...
Brent_F, Jan 2023
Seeing the trees and knowing they and the environment is being protected. This is only the beginning and needs to be continually looked at as there's lots of things that need fixing otherwise you will loose this resource. Dont let finances drive this. Our guide, Wayne's, knowledge and understanding of the area.
Rockin’ good time
Diana_C, Jan 2023
Jeff was not only a skillful driver, but a wealth of information. We took this tour after recent rains, and it was still raining on and off during the tour. Jeff navigated the rough terrain in the best way possible, all the while relating the history of the island. The places we stopped were magnificent, especially Lake McKenzie. The only negative was when we booked, I asked about meeting in Rivers Head, but was told to go to the Whale Center. This added about an hour onto the trip.
Great experience lots to see and worth every penny
Lesley_T, Jan 2023
An amazing day with lots to see. The guide made it a great experience full of knowledge , entertaining and witty
Excellent day

Initially the pick up looked like it was going to be chaotic but all went well and we were soon at the ferry. We had the pleasure of driver/guide Guy for our days adventure. The weather stayed overcast with light drizzle from time to time but that did reduce the overcrowding at the creek and lake. It was still plenty hot enough (for us Brits) to have a great time. The supplied lunch was a buffet with tasty hot and cold offerings. There was a bakery for purchasing of goodies but the queue was awful due to not enough staff behind the counter so we missed out on that one. Our favourite bits were the walk through the rainforest and the creek walk. On a humorous note, my fitbit had me down for 27,000+ steps that day. I doubt I did more than 7,000. The other 20,000 probably came from the motion of the 'truck/bus' as it bounced its way over the tracks which might possibly be called a road... All part of the experience and great fun. All in all we had an excellent day and would recommend it to anyone thinking about visiting the Island, just be aware of any back/neck problems you might have as the travel inland is very very rough.
Going back in time
