What To Expect

Greet your private guide at your Guatemala City hotel and climb aboard an air-conditioned coach to begin your sightseeing tour. As you travel, you’ll receive an interesting introduction to the history of Guatemala City, formerly known as La Nueva Guatemala de la Asunción.

Head to the city’s Civic Center (Centro Civico) to see an impressive array of buildings constructed in the 1960s; cruise past landmarks such as the Supreme Court, City Hall and the Ministry of Public Finance, and stop to admire the Bank of Guatemala’s murals designed by Dagoberto Vásquez.

Continue to the city’s historic heart — Constitution Plaza (Plaza de la Constitución) — and admire the plethora of monuments that reside there. The undisputed centerpiece is the Metropolitan Cathedral (Catedral Metropolitana), an 18th-century treasure topped by a vibrant blue dome. See, too, the National Library and the National Palace of Culture (Palacio Nacional de la Cultura).

The next stop on your private tour is the Central Market (Mercado Central), a bustling hub replete with stalls selling artisan souvenirs and local produce. Spend a while browsing ceramics, leather, textiles and jewelry, and then conclude with a visit to Paseo Cayala, a luxurious, whitewashed complex.

Here, you can purchase a delicious dinner and choose to spend the night in the hotel’s lavish accommodation. If you opt to leave Paseo Cayala after dinner, your tour concludes with drop-off at your hotel.

Fabulous Experience

We went out early at 7 am when the vendors at the market was were still setting up and Calle Real wasn't too busy with pedestrians. It was fun to walk the city streets and connect with local hotels and vendors. We also visited several cathedrals as well as the presidential palace. It was a feast for the eyes and camera. Our driver Juan Carols was also very good - very patient with each stop. Very good experience.

A driver and guide picked my co-worker and I up at our hotel and took us to the heart of the city. We toured for a couple of hours, which I felt was adequate to see the sites. Our guide was knowledgeable and his English was good. Be prepared to walk portions of the tour. There was never a time when I didn't feel safe jumping into a stranger's car. I'm glad I toured Guatemala City because I would have wondered what it is like if I didn't, but some of the other tours we took were more interesting, hence the four stars.

Juan-Pablo was a great tour guide and told us a lot about the city and the country. Honestly speaking, there is not too much to see in Guatemala City, but this short tour is a great first-day orientation.
