What To Expect

Ever since it began erupting in 1983, Kilauea has been one of the most world’s most active and fiery lava flows. On this full-day Big Island volcano adventure, you’ll not only experience the volcanic formations Kilauea has left behind, but also potentially witness the lava as Earth is created before your eyes.

The tour begins in downtown Hilo by historic Banyan Drive, where you’ll next travel to either a macadamia nut or tropical orchid farm. Upon entering Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, trek through the rainforest to the Thurston Lava Tube that was formed by a river of magma, and tour this well-lit tube to walk where magma once flowed. While the lava tube area is green and lush, the landscape is rockier up near the rim of Haleama’uma’u Crater, where sulfurous steam rises up from the pit and its lava lake far down below.

It’s in this area you’ll tour Jaggar Museum and learn about Kilauea’s past. If current safety conditions permit, you’ll have the chance to seek out lava as it actively flows from the Earth.

Volcano and City Tour in Hilo
sauwanbessie_m, Sept 2023
Just come a long way to see volcanos, time to stay in volcano park should be longer. The weather changes a lot , from rainy in Hilo to the Park up to the top is sunny,I'm so lucky to take a photo with rainbow behind.
THE MOST BORING TOUR EVER!!!
Mike_Y, Aug 2023
The MOST BORING TOUR I've ever been!!! I found myself nodding off 3x. Nothing against the driver/narrator Gabe.. but his monotone voice lulled me to sleep!!!😴 He could use an energy drink or coffee. The lack of energy was so contagious. I think the highlight of the Tour was the sandwich and chips we were given at lunch! They were so good but found our lunch interrupted by a couple of 5minute stops. I advice you to take this Tour on your own and save your money! The sights and stops are all bunched together and close by.. and can easily be driven to. My drive from Kona to the pickup location at Hilo was longer than all the drives this Tour made. Also, the van was so packed and we were all crammed at the back! Not to mention late.. But, if you have $325 to spare and need some sleep- then, this is the Tour to take!!!🤣🤣🤣 Sorry, I think the driver is nice and all (we even tipped him coz we felt so sorry the guy) but I think tourists shouldn't waste they're hard earned money and their day on this tour.

Aloha, we are sorry to hear that the tour and driver's performance didn't meet your expectations. Thank you for the feedback, which we have shared with our management team for appropriate follow up. Mahalo.
Volcanoes and more!
Norma_M, July 2023
I like the places we visited and our guide was very knowledgeable and friendly. We visited most of the volcanos but not all. However, the sound was terrible and at time it was hard to understand the explanation. The lunch that the tour provided was ok. I suggest to add some fruit to it. The tour lasted less than 10 hours.
Learned so much.
Karen_W, July 2023
The whole thing was great. Even got a little time in the farmers market and Hilo Town. Our driver had wonderful suggestions on what else to see on our own.
A Sight to See

Joseph was great and the summit was one amazing experience! Glad parkas were available to everyone. Hot chocolate and learning about the night time stars with Wes was really interesting . Learned a lot.

Fantastic tour of Hilo & Kilauea
Chris_L, Feb 2023
Best way to see & learn about Hilo — I’m so glad we took this tour. Our guide Dexter is a Hilo native and shared a thousand pieces of info about Hilo and the surrounding area that we never would have known otherwise. Highlights were Kilauea (bring a raincoat, just in case), and Rainbow Falls. Mahalo, Dexter!
Couldn't be better tour of the Big Island
James_D, Jan 2023
The volcano and the lava tube were very interesting. We saw the best sites of the island in one tour.
Had a great time!
Ellen_C, Jan 2023
Our tour guide Dexter, was very kind and knowledgeable! He explained everything we were seeing so well and answered every question any of us had! There was so much packed into one day and it was organized very well to make sure we had enough time to see it all!

Claire_P, Jan 2023
Great tour !!! Our guide dexter was very kind and full of knowledge. It was a full day tour with volcanos and waterfalls. We had the chance to see red lava . I recommend this tour
A bit disappointed with the tour
KIET_T, Dec 2022
Dexter was a good tour guide. He knew a lot about the island. However, the tour schedule could have been better. He just followed his schedule. The tour took us to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. We did stop at some popular spots there like lava rock, lava tube, overlook, etc. I think these are amazing. After the volcano trip, we drove 1.5 hour back to Hilo to see Akaka Falls, Hilo towns, black sand beach, Liliuokalani Gardens, Rainbow Falls and Kamehameha Statue. These places are so close to each other that's why we were able to see so many things. However, there are nothing special about them. I mean it's just a statue , a normal park and waterfalls. If you google those places I mentioned and look at photos, there are really nothing special personally. I wish I have a chance to see something better or more unique Overall, I think some people may like this tour but not for me. Some of these tourist attractions are so mundane. Also, on Viator, the tour said the start time is 8:15AM but in reality, it's 7:45! Tour company needs to update this information

I absolutely loved seeing the volcano and other parts of the island including the lava rocks, the lava tube, and the waterfalls.

IvanJoel_S, Sept 2022
Made a lot of stops through the East side of Hawaii. A great day. Experienced driver new from personnel experience about the island we tour. Thank you.
Worth every penny. Amazing tour.
Alejandra_G, Sept 2022
Dexter, our tour guide did an amazing job driving and explaining every detail on trees, places, volcanoes, flowers, etc. I am so glad we took this tour instead of driving myself because with Dexter we did not miss anything!
This trip is just ok.
Hermogenes_A, July 2022
This trip should have been a separate tour guide aside from the driver. To focus on telling us the story about the place. The itinerary presentation should have been well prepared to highlight the scenic spots and different stories and history about the place.
This was by far the WORST and I mean...
Hector S, July 2018
This was by far the WORST and I mean the WORST tour I've ever taken! To begin with, there's no such thing as a Volcano Tour here, period! Ever since Kilauea decided to erupt back in April, this tour should have been canceled--or else, call it a different name--period! The tour did not take us anywhere near the volcano, of course. Instead, they took us on a really long and boring tour around Hilo and some other natural attractions i.e., water falls, and a black sand beach. Other than that, all you see is the exiting town of Hilo, a nice Japanese park in Hilo too and have lunch at the Hilo mall. They also had to stop for some other people at the airport--the ones who actually booked a helicopter lava tour?. Of course, we had to wait for them sitting on a bus for I don't know how long. What bothers me the most about this tour is that even when they knew the Volcano National Park and Jaeger Museum had been closed for quite some time, they didn't even bother to contact me to let me know about the modifications they did to the tour--which, like I mentioned, had nothing to do with volcanoes at all. Instead, they just changed the scheduled altogether and that was that. I had to actually contact them directly to find out about the status of this tour. They person who picked up the phone sounded like a clueless high school kid with absolutely no knowledge of the services her company was offering (not Viator, by the way). The only redeemable feature of this tour was our guide Leroy, who was super nice and professional. He was able to tell us many interesting stories about Hawaii, which were very enlightening and entertaining. My daughter and I ended up taking a Lava Tour on a boat instead with a different local provider. That was a really an unforgettable experience. So... bottom line, if you want to do something, anything remotely related to volcanoes, this tour AS OF NOW is definitely not for you.
I absolutely loved the tour. I'd...
Abilynn M, May 2018
I absolutely loved the tour. I'd strongly recommend it for anyone looking for a fun and informative day tour from Hilo. The tour guide was informative and entertaining and we were lucky enough to be able to view some volcanic actions from Halemaumau after the fog had lifted. I can't wait to return to Big Island and take the tour again.
