Best way to experience Tassie!
Lynn_J, Mar 2023
There were 24 of us on a bus pulling a trailer with everyone's luggage. We started with Wombat. Who was very knowledgeabl,. he picked everyone up on time. Our group was a mixture of mostly young singles from all around the world traveling solo. Six of us were over 50 and the youngsters kept us young. We had a ball over the 5 days stopping at beaches, overlooks, waterfalls, farms, parks and waterfronts. We seldom drove more than one hour between stops. The 2nd day Justin replaced Wombat and the real fun began. We laughed, learned and sang our way down the highway seeing wallabys, wombats and birds, stopping and hiking at all these cool places we likely would never have stopped at on our own. Justin made the trip fun, exciting and educational. We paid a bit extra to stay at nice motels while most stayed at hostels. We became a family for a few days and have some new friends and lasting great memories. Never knew Tasmania until this trip. Highly recommend!

Gus the Guide, Bumpy the Backpack manager and twenty diverse characters careening through Tazzie! What could be more enchanting?!?
Response from Host, Oct 2022
Thank you. Come again!
wonderful 5days!
Catherine_C, Feb 2022
I had a wonderful time on this trip!. The itinerary was great and gave me a real taste of Tassie. Our guide Gus was just fabulous- he was friendly, knowledgeable, and fun. I would recommend this trip to anyone with limited time and a love of the outdoors.
Response from Host, Mar 2022
Thanks Catherine! Wonderful feedback all around. We hope you visit Tasmania again someday.
A Fabulous Experience
Ann_I, May 2021
I can't speak highly enough of this Under Down Under tour, and our guides Tim and Ian. I originally booked the tour because I was unable to hire a car, as it seemed to cover many of the sites that I had planned to visit. I ended up getting so much more, as our guides took us to places of which I was not previously aware, and they explained so much about what I was looking at, that I would not have known had I been driving about by myself. We were in a group of 18, of mixed ages and nationalities, and that enriched the experience even more for me, as I would have been a solo traveller. The highlights were the amazing National Parks ( The Russell and Nelson Falls, Lake St Clair, Cradle Mountain, the Gordon River, The Freycinet National Park, The Bay of Fires and the food (fresh oysters, amazing ice cream). Accommodation was in backpackers' hostels, and we bought our own food, so don't expect five star hotels. I thoroughly enjoyed myself and would probably choose to do a tour again in preference to travelling on my own.
Response from Host, Aug 2021
Thank you Ann for such a great review and the feedback on our guides Tim and Ian. As a note to readers, travellers can choose a motel option rather than the hostels, with twin share available at the hostels too if you prefer. All the best, Ann. Cheers.
Loved it!
Melissa_P, Dec 2020
Great tour! Loved the guide, loved the options, loved Tasmania and overall was super happy with the tour.

Thank you Melissa!
5 days in Tassie
Monika_I, Apr 2020
Everything was perfect. We had a nice group of 24 people and everything went smoothly. The attractions were great. The guide knew a lot about the area. We had a perfect combination of mountains, wildlife and beach experience. The hostels were okay too. Bring warm clothes, it gets quite cold in Tassie. The only thing I didn't enjoy much was The Gordon River Cruise. It was a rainy day and we had to choose either to walk in the rain the whole day or to pay extra for a boat cruise. Maybe it's beautiful on on sunny day, but this wasn't worth to pay any money.
It’s a Backpacker’s Tour!!
Shirley_L, Mar 2020
Booked online based on tour specs in website and opted for single room in motel accommodation. Specs states breakfast provided with the 5 days itinerary. Van transporter was on time for pick ups. The group has 24 pax and was max out in a 24 seater van. For the daily transfers from city to city, it’s pretty uncomfortable squeeze. 22 pax stayed in backpackers hostel while I and another lady choose single motels. Day 1&2 accommodation was unacceptable in cabin type rooms in a caravan park place. Imagine the Tour Guide/Driver tells you for breakfast, find a hole opening at a fence about 100m away and go to the backpackers kitchen for cereals and toast DIY style purchased by the Guide. Luckily Day 3&4 were at proper motels with breakfast provided. As for the tours, expect lots of trekking. Mostly are visits to national parks and lakes to behold nature, floral and fauna. Also went for the optional Gordon River Cruise. Nothing spectacular to me but lunch was good. And everyday, one has to remember to pack their own lunch from the daily supermarket stops. Dinners were at own choice at nearby restaurants near the motels or cook your own at backpackers kitchen. Certainly not my type of holiday tours and NOT value for the money paid.
Response from Host, Mar 2020
Thank you for your review. We are disappointed to know that our tour was not your type of holiday. Our tours are described as being active and nature/adventure-oriented. We visit some incredible places throughout Tasmania and while walks for varying fitness levels are offered at most locations, we can understand why you could have been disappointed if hiking is not your cup of tea. Yes, our multi-day tours include some breakfasts while all other meals are self-catered. This information is clearly stated on the description of our tours and in the FAQ section of our website. Best wishes!

Had the best time this week with an amazing guide, Jacob and tons of new friends! Wonderful itinerary highlighting stunning views in Tasmania! I didn't want it to end! Hostels and food were very nice for the package price and it was well organized
Response from Host, Mar 2020
Many thanks for reviewing us! We are extremely happy to know you had the best time on tour and that you liked our itinerary. Moreover, we are glad you enjoyed Jacob's guidance - he is indeed really good at what he does :) Best wishes!
Definitely the Best of Tasmania
ammapoppi, Feb 2020
Our tour guide, Jess, was amazing. She was a fountain of information on Tassie history as well as the flora and fauna of the island. The tour operator, Under Down Under, was very efficient and customer oriented. With one small exception the tour was on time all the time. We had a short delay in the first hour or so at the start of the tour but the company rectified the situation and made it right by buying everyone dinner the first night. There were two hiking situations and Jess was able to make everyone in our group comfortable in choosing an option suited to their abilities. We were on the 5 day tour and we covered the entire island with the exception of Port Arthur an Bruny Island, which I believe were included in the 7 day version. We would highly recommend this tour.
Response from Host, Feb 2020
Many thanks for reviewing the tour and recommending us! We are happy you had a wonderful time with Jess, she is awesome, and as you mentioned, very passionate about Tassie. In our multi-day tours we will always endevour to give a moderate walking option as well as a more difficult one. We are thrilled to know we lead you to a trail that suited your ability. Hope to see you again soon. Safe travels!
Tasmania bus boat hike
fbliss, Feb 2020
Enjoyed the youthful camaraderie. Ranged from strenuous hiking to mild walks. Boat trip in the roaring 40's (windy latitude), hikes to high points and hostel living was superbly fun.
Response from Host, Feb 2020
Many thanks for your review! We are thrilled to know you enjoyed the camaraderie as for us delivering life-long memories and friendships is a priority. Wilderness in Tassie is pretty amazing and one of the best ways of experiencing it is by hiking. We are happy to know you had fun walking with us. Do come back and experience the roaring 40's again soon. Safe travels!
Cradle Mountain was the best part
Jeffrey_L, Jan 2020
We paid extra for a Double Room. They put us up at the Mews Motel in Launceston because the motel they usually use only had 3 rooms so we were put at the Mews Motel. Worst hotel we ever stayed at. There was mold on the ceiling in the bathroom. I took a photo and can prove it. Phil was just Ok as a guide. He found humor in the fact that we lost a Japanese gal at the park and had to spend 40 mins looking for her. Van was super tight and uncomfortable. If I ever do a tour again I would only do 3 days not 5.
Response from Host, Jan 2020
Thank you for your comments and we’re glad that you enjoyed Cradle Mountain. Please be advised that we have immediately advised the hotel about the mould. We know they will be keen to resolve that as quickly as possible. Regarding the situation with Japanese guest who took an alternative trail in Freycinet National Park, on behalf of our guide we would like to apologise that you interpreted his behaviour as finding humour at the guest not showing up when expected. We wish to assure you that the safety of our guests is our number one priority at all times, and we have clear procedures in place to follow if we have genuine concern for the welfare of our guests. Thanks again, and we wish you all the best for your future travels.
Awesome tour group and guide
willharris9, Jan 2020
This is a basic (Budget) tour. But if ur happy with budget dorms, food (breakfast), transport, with cool travelers from different countries seeing some beautiful sights, animals, and having a laugh then ull enjoy this tour!
Response from Host, Jan 2020
Many thanks for your review. We are happy to know you met and had a good time with cool people while on tour with us. As you mentioned, Under Down Under Tours provides guests with a hassle free and eco-friendly way to experience Tasmania on a budget while travelling with minimal impact principles. Hope to see you soon in Tassie, all the best!
A great tour over Christmas
Emma_W, Dec 2019
I seldom go for organized tour and this has far exceeded my expectation. Very action packed 5 days and yet not rushed among stops. Enjoyed the bushwalk and hiking and (definitely need proper hiking shoes) and got into the cold water. And Rachel our guide has made this tour a blast to have. She went extra miles for everyone to be engaged and taken care of, and making the tour festive/family like over the Christmas time. Thank you Rachel.
Phil's Excellent Tasmanian Adventure
David_T, Nov 2019
This van trip around Tasmania was excellent primarily due to the expert and professional nature of our guide Phil with Down Under Tours operator. His knowledge of Tasmanian/Australian flora, fauna, history, geology, economics and sociopolitical topics brought a fantastic perspective to the tour of this beautiful island. Phil was also a skilled, safe and conscientious driver which made the tour even more enjoyable. The mix of folks on the tour, while random, was a great cross section of ages and world origins which was an extra bonus.
Great tour
memoriesareforever2, Oct 2019
It was what I had expected Local feel, down to earths guide Jess, Hiking options, hostel lodging, local characters , like at Bumpy’s If you don’t walk and do the hikes, you will miss the real experience and scenery
Tasmanian Holiday
Adelaide_C, Aug 2019
A very enjoyable holiday. We had a good time despite the cold and rainy weather. The tour leader went out of his way to make us enjoy the tour which was highly commendable.

Kenneth T, Apr 2018
First and foremost, you have to up your transportation game! The seating and van size were absolutely unacceptable. Our guide was a little inexperienced but he was a native Tasmanian and had a great energy. Hikes were awesome. Great vistas and incredible views!
The tour was very well organized...
ReginaldGerald_W, Mar 2018
The tour was very well organized. The various sights were amazing and there were enough breaks so that the long stretches of driving were easy to do. The driver/guide was very knowledgeable and accommodating.
Well we started off in Hobart on...
NIGEL_N, Mar 2018
Well we started off in Hobart on 14th feb 2018 visiting New Norfolk,Mt field Nat Park and Russel Fall, all very impressive,Tungatinah Power Station,Lake St Clair,Nelson Falls,Queenstown on our way to Strahan for our first night stay.Day 2 was up early to visit Montezuma Falls and the Metal Suspension Bridge which was very scary for me.All very impressive walking thro the Forest on the way to the Falls. Not vey pleasant in the pouring rain. Then we visited Roseberry,Henty Dunes which was very nice and back to Strahan for our secon night stay with a Barbecue Laid on by our Leader. Accomodation at the Backpackers Lodge was very good. Day 3 we we maide an early start to Cradle Mountain a which was shrouded in mist because of the persistent rain we were experiencing. We all did the Dove Lake Circuit in the Rain but views of the Lake and Scenery made up for it. Then it was off to Ashgove Cheese Factory for tastings and Coffee. Then on to House of Anusers for chocholate tasting etc. Then stopping at shefield for Groceries we arrived in Launceston for our 3 night stop.Up early again on the 4 day to Bay of Fires with mazing Rock Formations.A visit to St Helens was next and then on to the Wild Life Sanctuary to see the Feeding of the Tasman Devils,Quells and Wombats. We then arrived in Bischeno for our nightly stop.An early start was made on the 5th day to Wine Glass Bay Lookout. Some of us went to the beach down below. While others just went to hazards beach. The Climb up to to the Lookout over Wine Glass Bay was exhausting to say the least. It was for me!!!!. Then we went to see the Swansea Lighthouse which was interesting. Then on to Kate Berry Farm to taste the Ice Cream. Passing through Orford we arived back at Hobart around 05:30 pm on 19th Feb 2018. All in all a very interesting trip but far too much walking for my liking. A thoroughly mixed bunch of passengers who got on with each other very well.I must commnd the Driver as weel who was very knowlegeable and drove the Bus well. This is entirely my own opinion.
