  • Moorilla Estate winery tour and tasting with admission to Mona and round-trip ferry from Hobart
  • Discover the architectural wonder that was built underground to house Mona (Museum of Old and New Art)
  • Hear commentary from the ferry captain during the ride to the winery, and check out the onboard sculpture collection

What To Expect

Your tour starts at the Mona Ferry Terminal in Hobart for the 30-minute ferry ride along the River Derwent (when booking, select a ferry departure time, which determines how long you’ll be at the estate). During the ride, take in the custom-designed ferry’s interesting interior touches, from a cow sculpture to seats shaped like sheep.

Home to art and artifacts from Walsh’s private collection, the museum boasts a variety of items, from Greek coins to Egyptian mummies to daring modern art. Just as noteworthy is the design of Mona itself, an architectural stunner built mostly underground with 64,550 square feet (6,000 square meters) of exhibition space laid out like a labyrinth, which you can explore at your leisure.

Next, head to Source Restaurant for lunch. Enjoy any main meal, paired with a glass of wine from Moorilla’s Muse or Praxis Series and sweeping views of the vineyard, Derwent River, and Mount Wellington.

Continue with a behind-the-scenes tour and wine tasting in the vineyard, the second oldest in Tasmania. Learn how the grapes are handpicked, crushed, pressed, fermented, and matured, and how new and old artisan winemaking techniques are used to craft fragrant, elegant wines. Your host will provide an overview of the history of the region and winery, as well as information on the different grape varieties grown on site. The tasting features ten wines, including a selection from Moorilla’s prestigious Cloth Label Series.

When your time at Moorilla is up, catch the 5pm return ferry to Hobart.

This package was a great combination of ferry, MONA admission, delicious lunch, and fun wine tasting. Really nice collection of activities and I would definitely do it again. One thing I'd mention is that this really isn't a tour - all of the activities are self-guided and the only time you're with others on a tour is during the wine tasting, otherwise you're on your own. This may be exactly what you're hoping for, or different than what you expected. All in all, a great day!

The Moorilla Wine's, Mona day trip was good value for money, unique and well organised. We particularly enjoyed having the time to go back into the museum to listed to some live jazz before heading back to Hobart on the Ferry.
Interesting day out but needs a time check
MeredithA, Nov 2022
We had a art/wine day trip. Mona was a bit off - wouldn’t refer friends unless they like weird things - however was very stuffy in there and we were glad to get out. The lunch at the Source was great. Service excellent and food was very good. However we had to wait a long time before we had a wine tasting experience so it could have been earlier.

A quick trip across to Mona on the ferry. A morning spent looking around at the exhibitions which were both amazing, inspiring and controversial. A beautiful lunch at The Source Restaurant. An afternoon wandering around the grounds, followed by a Moorilla Winery Tour and wine tasting. Not a bad way to spend the day and definitely worth doing the full day tour. Excellent.
Do it!

It was our first visit to Mona and we found it absolutely fascinating, the lunch at Source was excellent and the wine tasting at the end just added to the day.
Crap tour

What a terrible experience from start to finish. Went to pick up tickets a day prior and was told if we didn’t have a order number for our tickets she could not help us. We paid for the tickets several weeks prior and confirmation of payment via email and to pick up the tickets from the Mona kiosk. After having paid $190 per ticket, having to argue the point that we had confirmation she then happened to find our tickets. This was not a god start. On the day of the tour we got there to secure a good visual point on the ferry. Once boarding started and moving towards the check in point we were told that our tickets were not valid. We then had to stand aside whilst one the the crew members went to check what was going on. By this point everyone had boarded the ferry and we had to wait for the crew member to return with valid tickets. Again this was not a good experience. The tickets handed back to us looked exactly the same as the ones first given to us. Hence being the last to get on the ferry where was standing room only. What a tour from hell. Would never recommend this to anyone. Oh and make sure you bring your face mask with you which was only told to us minutes prior to boarding. Everyone was scrambling to find face masks . Some people had go back to there car or go and purchase some. Worst experience ever the whole day was spoiled by incompetence from start to finish.
A must do!

The Ferry ride was lovely & relaxing, Mona was incredible, staff all around are so helpful and friendly and the food amazing
Viator is dreadful as a 3rd party supplier
Jennifer_S, Mar 2021
Viator as a 3rd party provider were dreadful. The information was incorrect and there was absolutely no value in having been directed and booked via their website. The Ferry and Mona and Moorilla Winery are wonderful and well worthwhile but book them directly, DO NOT go via Viator as you will receive incorrect information that will ruin the experience for you. We have recommended that MONA remove Viator as a supplier.
MONA EXPERIENCE
cate_m, Mar 2020
Unfortunately we did not go to Moorilla as we spent too much time at MONA. Mona is awesome, fascinating, thought provoking and an amazing experience. Having pre-booked tickets and ferry was great. I am sure Moorilla would have also been great but we opted to miss this, as we had been to many wineries previously but there is only one Mona.
Great Birthday gift.
Jacki_S, Mar 2020
This was a birthday gift for our two Adult Children on a mountain biking holiday. They report that it was an absolutely excellent day with no complaints. Text photo's of the meal confirms that it too was excellent. All in all a great day relaxing before hitting the trails again.
Great day

ERIN C, Nov 2017
MONA is a one-of-a-kind museum in every respect. There is a tremendous amount to see, so give yourself maximum time in the Museum. This is not an organized tour, meaning that there is not a guide and you do not spend time with other travelers. The MONA staff explain how to enter the museum and they are helpful. The restaurant and starting point for the winery tour are in the same location - a separate building just behind the museum building.

MONA is definitely worth the trip and this tour was the best way to see the museum.

Pamela_B, July 2016
I have been to a lot if different museums, but this one is quite unique. Loved the ferry ride over as it was a beautiful day. The lunch included at the wine bar was superb. Not sure if the time allowed for wine tasting is quite enough. Would go back to Museum again!

Winery tour was a good intro to the history of the estate and workings of winemaking which was an eye opener. Guide Dave was friendly and we tasted some wines straight out of the barrel and tanks! Lunch consisted of cold cuts which was not great and art work was too eclectic.

Unfortunately our tickets were not available as they should have been at the ferry terminal. This caused some frustrating delays which we were told was the fault of the company we booked with, Viator! Once we got that sorted out the rest of the trip went smoothly including the lunch which was delicious. We decided against the winery tour and returned on the 3 o'clock ferry it's a long day with lots of walking and steep steps.

Was worried we had too much time but in the end we could have done with another 30mins. Gallery is magnificent. Lunch was delicious and service very attentive. Wine tour during vintage still accessed all areas and was informative and entertaining. All round great day out. Would hesitate to recommend.

Deb T, Feb 2016
There was no advantage in pre purchasing tickets as you can easily buy them at the wharf before boarding the ferry. Our viator tickets weren't recognised and therefore we had to wait until it was sorted. We paid a considerable amount extra for the viator tickets and received nothing more than if we had organised the tour ourselves. Do the Maths and save your money.
