If you’ve always wanted to learn to surf, Jaco is a great place to finally do it. During the two-hour lesson you’ll learn to paddle, stand up, drop into waves, and ride. By the end of the lesson you should be ready to stand and ride your first wave. Receive personalized attention in a small-group lesson that will be tailored to your experience level.

Pickup details

Please note free pick ups are available within a 1 (one) Kilometer radius of Jaco. If traveler is located outside of 1 KM radius we can pick them up with a fee which will be confirmed depending on location. Easiest way is enter in Google Maps Jaco Surf School. We are located in Calle Bohío which is a one way street. Once you enter Calle Bohío you will pass by a river, continue driving and we’ll be at the corner. Look for a sign Jaco Surf School.

You can cancel up to 24 hours in advance of the experience for a full refund.

For a full refund, you must cancel at least 24 hours before the experience’s start time.
If you cancel less than 24 hours before the experience’s start time, the amount you paid will not be refunded.
Any changes made less than 24 hours before the experience’s start time will not be accepted.

Cut-off times are based on the experience’s local time.
This experience requires good weather. If it’s cancelled due to poor weather, you’ll be offered a different date or a full refund.

I had the best time. They took care of we and were able to accommodate to my time. Farlen in particular is a great teacher. He had great energy and was very professional making sure I learned and felt safe.I had no prior experience to surfing and by the end of the lesson i was confident and catching the waves.

Busted boards

We booked this online prior to our travel. I wish we would have waited until we were there to book a surf lesson. There were several "surf schools" right on the beach you could walk up to and book a lesson. I will say that the guys who were working with us were all nice and everyone in our family was able to stand up and surf. However, the boards were so busted and water logged. If you've never surfed before you might not know better but having surfed quite a bit in the past these were literally the worst boards I have ever seen. Find a surf school without busted up boards!

Dear Karen, Thank you for sharing your experience with us. At Jaco you can find many school, however most come and go and very few are customer centric and have little emphasis on safety. At Jaco Surf School we are part of the international surfing association for lifeguard and teaching surfing. Also we have been in business since 1989 and we take pride in our teaching methodology, water safety and the image our school portraits, so our equipment is very important to us. The equipment does get used frequently as they are surfboards used to teach, so at times they may get dinged but we fix them right away to prevent further damage to the equipment.

Super nice staff and overall wonderful lesson! Great for beginners. :) Lesson did start a couple hours later than planned, (surf conditions wasn’t there which was unfortunate but had a nice time waiting it out on the beach). Would recommend having a bit more flexible timing on the day you book just in case.

Fun intro for anyone willing to try surfing

Good introduction, great help out in the water, lots of fun. I have always wanted to try surfing and I so happy I did and managed to stand up the first time and almost every time and stay on and catch tiny waves. I am almost 50 and not a small person so if I can, you can! It's worth it for the experience. My 11 year old was of course a master straight away and jumped up and surfed every way perfectly. Our instructor was helpful and patient with us.

I have never had surf lessons but my teacher made it so easy for me to understand the basics. He made sure we traveled to the safest side of the beach and on our break we even played a bit of soccer. He was a very humble guy. I loved the experience and would do it all over again!
