The teacher was very friendly and welcomed us to her home. Her English was excellent. She taught us about 3 aspects of Japanese cooking. Umami, how to make a simple Dashi broth, and Sushi. We got to make ( and eat) our own Sushi.

Test kitchen environment - highly recommend
Tom_J, Aug 2023
The cooking class is in a test kitchen setting making it easy to follow. You prepare many of the ingredients and the class starts with a good review of the different tastes and the origin of umami - with the help of the chef we made great tasting sushi - would highly recommend this class for families - professionally run and lots of fun!

Sushi Making at an authentic Japanese guest house
Julie_B, July 2023
We enjoyed our experience in the sushi making class - we were given some great tips on how not to squash the rice and how to make a stock using dried bonito and dried seaweed. It was informative, fun and we got to eat what we'd made. It was quite hard to find, so do follow the instructions they send you. It was in a guest house and therefore more of an authentic experience than you might have elsewhere. We were in a family group, but there were a group of American children there on their own, youngest was about 7 and a Mexican guy joined us too, so you could go on your own or with a group.
Response from Host, July 2023
Hi, Julie

My First Sushi Lesson. A beginning.
David_B, July 2023
We were lucky that our Viator booking the prior day was accepted. Our workshop partners were not quite as fortunate but the teacher worked hard to sort it out. The route information was most user friendly and we non Japanese speakers had no difficulty catching the downtown bus and getting out at the correct intersection then walking along the covered mall to Gullman Cafe turning left and following the arrows.
The kitchen is spotless, our teacher speaks idiomatic English (she studied English Literature at University). Notes are provided with pens and we got going.
To make dashi and 2 types of sushi the Kyoto style and the more common rolls from scratch flows really easily and safely in this kitchen and we are most grateful for the sharing of knowledge know how technic and kindness as well as delicious food to take away.
Highly recommended.
Response from Host, July 2023

Johnica_M, Mar 2023
My husband and I did this class while on our honeymoon and wound up in class with another couple who were also on their honeymoon. :p We had a lovely time learning about the cultural tradition of Japanese dining and how to make some traditional dishes. The instructor did an excellent job of integrating history, culture, and culinary techniques into the experience! We are excited to try our hands at making dashi and sushi at home and highly recommend this to anyone who enjoys cooking and/or learning new things!
