What To Expect

Discover the art and science behind one of Japan’s most beloved convenience meals, the bento box, during a 3- to 3.5-hour course allowing the chance to make a bento of your very own. This cooking lesson is a fascinating way to learn the history, preparation and culture behind this delicious Japanese meal.

Begin your bento box course in the morning at a cooking studio in Kyoto. Start your session with some background into the origins of this Japanese foodstuff. The history of the bento begins in the 13th century, a time during which the Song Dynasty used the word ‘bento’ as a slang term for anything convenient.

Start your cooking experience with a lesson from a Japanese master chef, who will demonstrate the techniques used to prepare many bento box staples. Try your hand at creating several typical bento box specialties, including miso soup, tempura vegetables and egg rolls, a perennial favorite of Japanese schoolchildren nationwide. Depending on when you take your course, the menu may differ, as it’s adjusted every three months to include the best-available seasonal ingredients.

At the conclusion of your cooking class, stow your knife and apron and sit down to enjoy the delicious flavors of your handmade bento box creation with other course participants. When you finish your bento lunch, you’ll also be given copies of the session recipes so you can recreate them for friends and family back home.

Our instructors were very knowledgeable and so kind! We made an assortment of foods, and I learned some new cooking techniques. Some highlights were the sushi rolling and tempura frying. The bento boxes came out beautifully, and we were really glad we took this class! Would highly recommend for friends, couples, and families. It’s a great way to spend a morning.

We had a great time making our boxes and really enjoyed eating them at the end. I would highly recommend. It was also a very relaxing way to spend a few hours out of an otherwise hectic sightseeing schedule 😊
Best cooking class in Japan!
Genie_B, July 2023
This was the third cooking class I have taken in Japan and BY FAR the best. We learned how to make a ton of dishes from start to finish (a lot of other courses cheat and give you a bunch of already made ingredients). Everything was well prepped and thoughtfully set up so that even though we made a lot, it felt seem less. The instructors were welcoming, clear, and knowledgeable. Highly recommend!!!
100% recommend - just eat breakfast first!

The food was great and the instructors were helpful! Would definitely recommend! We skipped breakfast, which I would not recommend, definitely have something to eat before because cooking and not being able to eat it until the end gets you hungry!
Cook like a pro!

The chefs were great! They were fun and helpful and instructional. With their direction everything in my Bento Box tasted good. The experience made me appreciate Japanese cooking and made it less intimidating.

There were items in this class that I was afraid to try myself or had tried in the past and completely failed. This bento box cooking class broke down things in an easy manner and now I feel confident enough to make an attempt.
A Taste of Authenticity: Unforgettable Culinary Journey in Kyoto
Kevin_W, May 2023
There are few experiences as delightful and immersive as the cooking class we attended in Kyoto, where we dove headfirst into the heart of traditional Japanese cuisine. The culinary journey started with the mastery of classic dishes: the light crispiness of tempura, the delicate artistry of sushi, the comforting warmth of miso soup, the refreshing simplicity of a spinach salad, and the robust flavors of teriyaki chicken. Our guides through this gastronomic adventure were expert instructors who combined profound knowledge of their craft with a passion for teaching, offering detailed explanations, demonstrations, and personal stories that made the complex seem approachable. The kitchen itself, a testament to cleanliness and organization, served as the perfect backdrop to this learning experience. It was fully equipped and spotless, setting a professional and enjoyable ambiance for the class. This cooking class was not merely about following recipes; it was an engaging, fun, and educational experience that plunged us into the heart of Japan's rich culinary culture. We wholeheartedly recommend this Kyoto cooking class to anyone seeking a unique blend of fun and education, promising an unforgettable experience of authentic Japanese cooking.

The teachers were so well organized and so well prepared that we were able to learn to make many dishes for our Bento box. We love our new skills and look forward to trying them at home, thanks to the recipe brochure that was also provided
Great Class to boost your Cooking Skills!
Adrienne_M, Mar 2023
Awesome class taught by May! She was a great instructor, and helped us create our own bento boxes! We each got a menu and how to make each item. It was a guided lesson, but each student did most of the work. Overall very fun and rewarding!
Must try

The instructors were really good showing us how to do each part and then helping when we tried to follow. We made 6 different items that became part of our bento box.

A highlight of the holiday
Paul_N, May 2020
What a great way to spend a few hours, my wife and I were lucky enough to be the only ones in the class so we had all the attention. The lesson was interesting, lots of helpful tips to make the perfect Bento box (and it was). I would highly recommend this class.
