Arriving at the Haleakala National Park, steadily climb by minibus up Haleakala to 9,740 feet elevation to the Visitor Center. Observe the first rays of the new day slowly creep across the distant horizon. Soon the sky fills with the majestic glow of the new day, and the warm beams of light creep across the island of Maui, illuminating the land below. It’s a sight you’re sure to remember for many years to come.

At the end of your morning sunrise experience you’ll head to breakfast at a local restaurant and then receive a drop-off back at your Maui hotel, tired but thrilled by your amazing morning trip.

Awesome Experience…BUT DRESS WARM!!!!

This experience was well worth the time and money invested! Preston, our tour guide, was absolutely AWESOME!!! He was so knowledgeable, helpful, informative, and gracious. He’d see my family and I standing somewhere and take us to another spot with a better view, or take us to tell us a story about a native flower/plant. Most importantly, learn from my mistake and DRESS WARM!!! Not Hawaii warm, but warm for a COLD morning camping in the mountains!!! Definitely wear long pants/sweats, a hat, sweatshirt AND A JACKET!!! The wind cuts through you and it is REALLY COLD!!!!

I slept the whole ride up but when I did wake up I heard a lot of useless information about people who used to live in houses along the route. Our guide spoke for 20 minutes about the story of the Beatles but I would have rather heard about the history or geography of Maui. Upon arrival many other busses where already at the summit and I could not find a clear shot from the railing. I set up my tripod next to the fence, on the outside of the fence to get a clear shot, but one leg was inside the fence, so maybe the other two legs of my tripod were 18 inches outside the boundary. A guide with the same company but who I had never met named Preston yelled at me very loudly ‘what are you doing outside the fence?? (only my camera was outside the fence) and then yelled ‘get back inside the boundary, you have no respect for the rules or the island’ this was said with a very angry tone and at a loud volume. I slept most of the drive up and so I had just woken up, jet lagged and in a daze and to hear a stranger yell at me like this was startling. I payed mentioned this to our guide and he said I deserved it and that he would have yelled at me louder :( I also found out that there is an insect population that is protected at the summit and that the tripod legs may have disturbed or destroyed their habitat. I was unaware of this and would not have wanted to cause damage. The guides were crass and seemed burned out on dealing with tourists :( our guide made fun of the others on the way up for doing a ritual chant at sunrise, claiming that the guides who chant are no Hawaiian and therefore it’s a fake experience designed for tourists to get tips. He said he never chants with them and made fun of the whole thing. This ruined the experience for me a little to have already heard this perspective on the drive up. On the way down we had breakfast at a garden, which was tasty and well organized. Seating was family style so we had to sit 3 or 4 groups together. That was fine but weird. I still tipped him of course but it might be time to retrain the guides on how to handle difficult situations while respecting the guests. I wish I had not spent $200 on this tour to just be sleep deprived, reprimanded like a dog who had intentionally peed on the rug, then have my photography ruined because I had to break down and set up again, and by that time there were no spots left at all.

Haleakala with Preston!

The sunrise trip to Haleakala in Maui was spectacular. Can't get a better sunrise, we had a perfect weather day (at a balmy 45 degrees, LOL!). The adventure was made even better by our guide. Preston was a phenomenal guide. He made the experience so much better because of his extensive knowledge and "chill" attitude (no pun intended). This man just emitted Maui vibes with an Australian accent! You can tell he truly loves his job as a guide, and he has a great sense of humor! Definitely ask him "how far is the distance between mile markers?" LOL! Everything he pointed out was a sight to see, little tips at the top of the crater (or shall I say depression!). While everyone is looking at the sunrise, he reminds you to turn around...you'd be amazed at the sky colors and shadow of the mountain on the landscape behind you. Even though the whole bus of people scattered once we got off the bus for the sunrise, somehow, Preston managed to find each of us to give us his words of wisdom. I believe the flower I posted was one of his favorites! The restaurant, Kula Lodge, we stopped at for breakfast had terrific food, super friendly staff, and also a beautiful view and gardens. Haleakala is a must see!! Don't be deterred by the early pick up time. It is worth it! And if you can, request Preston!

The sunrise is something that shouldn’t be missed. It is awe inspiring. Our guide told us the best spot to see and got us there early enough to get in that spot.

The ride up was great as our driver narrated and gave us lots of information about our surroundings as well as history! Once we got to where the sunrise spot was, it was very cold so be sure to heed their warning to dress warmly! The sunrise was a bit late in happening but it peeked out from the clouds and was breathtaking. Half way down the mountain, we stopped at the Kula Lodge for a yummy breakfast! I would highly recommend taking this excursion.

Amazing morning. Definitely worth the early wake up! We had a hazy start with a lot of cloud cover but it blew out and we saw a spectacular sunrise in the crater. It was amazing! We had a great breakfast as well at the cafe. The macadamia nut pancakes were so fluffy and delicious. Preston our tour guide was the best. He definitely made this trip a worthwhile experience!!!

What an experience!!! Alfredo was an awesome guide and made our experience so memorable. I could not imagine taking this tour any other way. The roads are windy and dark which made us feel 1000 times safer being on the tour. Your able to sleep comfortably on the bus and fully enjoy the experience. Alfredo shared facts about the island and took us to the cutest little breakfast spot in the hills along the way. People say to dress warm- BELIEVE them!!!

I never thought this was on my bucket list but I'm so glad I made the trip even though I had to get up in the middle of the night. On the day of my excursion, the temperature at the top of the mountain was only down in the 40's and the wind was not too strong so it was very tolerable if you had on enough layers. The sunrise itself was both stunning and humbling at the same time. Mother Nature did not disappoint!

Breath taking and the best way to see the different areas of Maui. I would have never known about upcountry if we hadn’t taken this tour. Tour guide Preston gave a very thorough history of Maui and went out of his way to share stories and take the time to stop and explain things along the way. Everyone in our group agrees sunrise tour has been our favorite experience. Dress warm as it was only 42 degrees when we went.

Our driver was excellent he was patient and so happy to share island spots. Dress warm people it’s freezing up there. Just the moment the sun comes up the background chanting is all magical. Breakfast was wonderful and a great end to an amazing experience. I would recommend this trip for all visitors.
