What To Expect

Well known by its moniker ‘the Little Red Train,’ the Bernina Express was designed to climb the Swiss Alps with ease. A testament to engineering work completed more than a century ago, the train is still able to complete the cliff-clinging Bernina Pass on a route that now has UNESCO World Heritage status.

Travel from Milan to Switzerland in the morning, and relax on your coach journey to Tirano. After some free time in the town, board the Bernina Express and gaze out of your window as the historic train passes through the idyllic stretches of Northern Italy and the Swiss Alps.

Ride over the spiral viaduct of Brusio, and along the Bernina Pass to Engadin. Watch the scenery change from windswept gorges and snow-clad glaciers to the chic chalets of St Moritz.

Hop off the train to enjoy free time in the town. An elegant vacation spot that’s popular for winter sports, St Moritz has a bounty of attractions to keep you busy. Stroll the lake, ogle the snow-specked mountains that ring the town, enjoy lunch or browse the local chocolatiers to sample Swiss chocolate. All food is at your own expense.

In the early evening, return to Milan by coach. Your tour of Northern Italy and Switzerland finishes with a drop-off at the start point.

Brusio Spiral Viaduct (Pass By)

Your journey continues taking you over the spiraling Brusio viaduct and through the Bernina Pass (2253 meters above the sea level) into the Engadin Valley before arriving at St. Moritz. Along the way you'll pass wild gorges and icy glaciers, cross soaring bridges and shoot through loop tunnels. This north-south Alpine crossing offers breathtaking views and stunning scenery as you travel over boldly curved viaducts and through winding tunnels.The view goes around while the train winds up to the heights of the famous circular viaduct of Brusio,with a 90-degree curve.

Bernina Express (Pass By)

The station "Ospizio Bernina" lies at 2253 m a.s.l., making it the highest-altitude station on the Rhaetian Railway. From the train you will se the Alp Grum, the Palu Glacier and the Lake Palu.

Traveller Tips

This trip takes about 13 hours Milan-Milan but it it is a must, because of the fabulous train ride threw beautiful snowed landscapes.
If you stop for lunch in Tirano before boarding the train, I strongly recommend that you pass on the tour guide's reco and go to the Merizzi restaurant for a fantastic meal.
For the technical stops, given the group size, I recommend to give a bit more time.

It was a long day!! But it was worth it. The scene were astonishing! The mountains in the winter are wonderful. My only recommendation is be prepared for a long day seated on the bus and on the train. Also, there is no food on the train and not much time to get food during the stops. Enjoy and good luck!

It’s magical. Especially the 2 hours in st moritz. Beautifully organised trip. Sit on the left side of the bus, eat raclette in st moritz. Enjoy every second of it.

The whole trip met my expectation. The scenery, the snow and the picturesque mountains. Make sure to wear right clothing as it is very cold up there. -10 degrees. Take motion sickness tablet if you are those light headed. The bus journey up thr mountains are really straining with the slow speed and endless loops. But the tour group could do better. 1. Have signs outside the place for the tour group to queue. This is differentiate English tour from Spanish/Italian tour. 2. Tour guide could have stand outside the bus and check for participants instead of in the bus. It was chaotic cause the tour participants were rushing to get in the bus and at the same those who already boarded were told to get off as they were in the wrong tour. 3. Pls specify the different types of restaurant at St Moritz. For us who require halal food, we were left wandering like lost sheeps. 4. The volune of the tour guide could be louder. We were seated at the back of the bus and couldn't hear him at all. He was like murmuring to himself. Thanks

Had a great time! The guide was very knowledgeable and friendly. Safe and clean luxury bus (no wifi) they stopped at a nice restaurant before getting to Switzerland. The trip was well planned. Do get something to eat in Switzerland, it will take a while to get back. Enjoy!

Worth every penny! This was a stunning day from beginning to end. The bus ride had STUNNING switchbacks and views but made me horrendously car sick. The tour guide was so sweet and made sure to find a pharmacy once we reached St. Moritz. I felt much better after that and loved spending time walking around the town, grabbing some chocolate and soaking it all up. The train ride is the main attraction and wow it was definitely worth getting car sick at first. Get ready for a movie moment. The windows can be pushed down for best views/pictures and the heater works great so I wasn’t cold at all. I definitely recommend this tour- it’s a must do!

The trip to St Moritz, passing through Lake Como was amazing. Make sure you take a seat on the left side for this. St. Moritz is beautiful but quite expensive! The whole Bernina Express trip was amazing. Make sure your phone is fully charged. Breathtaking scenes!
