What To Expect

Choose your desired departure time when booking, then meet a guide at your Monteverde hotel for the trip to a birdwatching area for a 3- or 6-hour tour—possible destinations include the Tilaran Mountain Range, the cloud forest, or a local preserve.

Follow trails through habitat that supports 45% of Costa Rica’s bird species, watching for more than 450 individual species. One highlight of the forest surrounding Monteverde is the chance to see the brilliant plumage of a resplendent quetzal, and your naturalist guide will help you spot the greatest possible range of tropical birds.

Other favorite birds include the blue-crowned motmot and the green-violetear hummingbird, whose metallic plumage can be spotted the length of Central America. Throughout your walk, take advantage of your time with a private guide to ask questions, explore the things that interest you most, and set your own pace, walking as fast or slow as you want.

Following your time in the forest, this half- or full-day tour concludes with return transfer to Monteverde, and drop-off at your hotel.

Olger was a great guide, very patient and respectful. We spotted(well, really just him, we wouldn't have seen even half of what he did) all of the animals we were hoping for (many birds, some small mammals, and a tarantula!) and he was obviously very knowledgeable about the wildlife and natural history of the area. He even went as far as to teach us a few bird calls and told us specifically where we could locate some more types of birds in Selvatura later that day when we were on our own, which we were able to do due to his information! Overall a great experience.

Johnny loves nature.

Johnny was clearly very knowledgeable as well as entraining. He clearly knew a lot. About the flora and fauna. He delivered us several toucan viewings as well as hummingbirds, woodpeckers and a few coatimundi as well. He was a little late to the appointment but communicated well and we had our full two hours in the forest.

After a bad start (we were not picked up for the tour, due to tour operator’s problems,) and an amicable agreement, we ended with very good tour seeing many birds and animals. An entertaining guide and good supply of creatures ensured an enjoyable experience.

We have booked the bird watching tour via Johnny Bird watching with high expectation via Viator. Due to communication issues from Johnny and we were unable to reach him and we did not pickup from the hotel. All our family disappointment with this and we wasted a day and $$$ in Monteverde. Make sure go thru your hotel recommended agent not Viator recommended.

Tour Operator was a no show and unreachable

I can’t rate the tour itself, but this rating is for the tour operator. The operator was a no show and we could not reach the operator from the hotel front desk. Despite trying several times to reach the operator Johny, he would not answer the call. We ended up waiting for about 30 mins and lost that afternoon not being able to take part in any other tour because of this reservation. And he offered no refunds . Beware of Johnny-loves-nature Eco-tour. Viator was not helpful either. They don’t want to take ownership refund it either. Didn’t expect such a poor customer service from Viator. They didn’t even consider the fact that we didn’t get to go on tour and ended up losing the afternoon. No one would want to pay for the services which was not fulfilled. Viator still asked for a review of this tour that we didn’t even get to go on. Here is my review of the tour operator and Viator’s customer service. Buyer beware. Don’t waste your vacation time.
