What To Expect

Bring your walking shoes and a healthy appetite on this culinary tour of Montreal’s Jewish neighborhood. Make your way to the area in the late morning to meet your local foodie guide, and set off by foot through the charming historic streets. Your first stop is a deli specializing in smoked meats in the district of Outremont, home to a large Hasidic Jewish community. Enjoy a taste of three dishes used in traditional Jewish cooking while your guide gives an overview of Montreal’s culinary makeup.

Continue on to a local kosher bakery to sample sumptuous Jewish desserts, which may include chocolate babka, triangular stuffed hamentashen, nutty rugelach and poppy seed cake. No Jewish food tour would be complete without a visit to a bagel joint, so taste for yourself what some claim to be Montreal’s best bagel at the next stop.

In between tasting stops, admire the neighbor’s diverse architecture and listen to your guide share tales of famous former residents, such as writer Mordecai Richler.  To get a true feel the neighborhood’s dining scene, pop in to a local restaurant that’s been dishing up authentic Jewish dishes for more than 80 years.

By the end of the tour, expect to eat five to seven different samples that make up a satisfying meal.

Thank you so much Susan! I was so lucky to have you both on not one, but two tours! Both were really intimate groups too which made it extra enjoyable. It was a great day and the weather cooperated. You were both a treat to have and I wish you much more fun on your journeys!

Must be fit for this long walk
David_S, July 2022
This is MUCH longer and harder than advertised. The website says 1.8 miles. Someone on our tour had a pedometer and measured it at over 2.5 miles. The website says handicapped accessible - I would hate to have major walking problems or a wheelchair and attempt this tour. Even when you stop to eat most of the time you are standing. Of the four + hours we were on our feet for over 3 1/2 hours. The guide walks way ahead and stops to talk - but does not wait for the back of the group. If you are in the back you either miss the talk or only hear the end. You really need to be fit for this tour and need to keep up with the guide if you want to hear all the commentary. Actually would be a better tour if it were shorter. Guide knows her stuff and much of the food was good.
Response from Host, July 2022
Thank you for leaving a review. It is 3.3 kilometres and we have mapped it on Google Maps. That’s 1.8 miles. Maybe just walking to the tour and within the businesses it adds steps. We clearly state the distance and it is a tour that is dense in content and food. To do it all, we have to keep a certain pace. You’re right. It isn’t for everyone and you do have to be able to keep up, walk for 3.3 kilometres. We’re transparent about that. For people with mobility issues, a shorter private version is possibly better or a shorter tour with another company.
Tour guide Melissa was a gem!

Fantastic tour !
Gary_M, Mar 2022
This tour was fantastic ! Mélissa was a very knowledgeable and engaged guide who went out of her way to ensure that we all experienced the joys of Jewish cuisine. The chocolate babka from Cheskies has changed my life !
Response from Host, Mar 2022
Haha! That's amazing for the babka. Thank you so much for coming out and reviewing the tour. It was a great tour with a few nice surprises along the way.
Jewish food tour a nice surprise
Herbert_N, Aug 2019
I have never written a review before, but I felt that this food tour went beyond food of the area. Melissa not only took us to all the places we had on our list [Leisters to Schwartz’s and all the places in between] but provided a history of the Jewish people in that area. You won’t leave this tour Hungary for food or knowledge, many nice surprises on the tour. Well done Melissa

This is a terrific tour! Mélissa was a great guide and she knows her stuff. While the food we sampled ...and sampled ...and sampled was fantastic, the tour also included MUCH more with explorations and discussion of Montreal history, architecture, and demographics. We also had periodic poetry readings and topped it all off with a wonderful tour through historic synagogue! WELL DONE!!!!

Excellent tour. Daren our tour guide was great. He is very knowledgeable and informative. He made sure the people on our tour with food allergies still got to participate and he found something they could eat. Prepare to learn a lot of information as well as eat a lot of food. You will eat what amounts to two meals and get a delicious desert. You will go to 3 places that have smoke meats. They are all awesome. You will also get one of the best bagels you will ever have.
